- August 28 – September 1, 2023 (Opening Week): all students attend the mandatory orientation programming.
- September – December 2023: all students complete the same foundation courses.
- January – April 2024: students begin to specialize in their tracks while still completing some integrated and thematic courses together as a cohort.
- May – August 2024: all students complete the BA 512 – BSI: Experiential Learning course (taking part in an internship, or completing an entrepreneurial project or industry project).
- September – December 2024: all students complete mainly elective courses, some thematic courses, and one final integrated course together.
- May 2025: Graduation!
Key terms you should know:
- Foundation Courses: courses covering the basic business and management subjects. (Required for all students to complete)
- Business Strategy Integration (BSI) Courses: courses which integrate across disciplines to develop your managerial decision-making skills. (Required for all students to complete)
- Thematic Courses: courses covering five critical business skills that form the DNA of the UBC MBA program. (Required for all students to complete)
- Track Courses: if you choose to declare a track you will have a certain number of courses that are required in order to earn the track designation on your transcript.
- Elective Courses: all other courses offered in the program – each student chooses their own mix of courses to make up the remaining credits in the program.
- Period: A period is 6 weeks long and is equivalent to half a Term. During the six (6) weeks, you will have five (5) weeks of instruction and one (1) week of exams. The MBA program is made up of 7 Periods that run from September 2023 until December 2024.
- Course: A course is scheduled within a Period and is worth 1.5 credits. MBA students are typically registered in 4-5 courses per Period.
Courses will cover a variety of key subject areas. Not only will students learn the language of business, but they will develop the skills to understand business problems, make managerial decisions, and communicate solutions, both as individuals and as part of a team.
In addition to regular courses, the program also includes Personal and Professional Development (PPD) programming:
Working with the Hari B. Varshney Business Career Centre and a career coach, students will gain valuable career and professional development skills through a curriculum that includes self-assessment, research techniques, resume and cover-letter writing, interviewing, and networking. CPD will help students develop and polish professional skills that will serve them for the duration of their careers.

Course Prerequisites: As students progress through the program, some courses will have prerequisites. A prerequisite is a course that has content that is integral for students to learn prior to taking the listed course. For example, in order to take some of the more advanced Finance courses, students need to have a good foundation in certain Finance content. Consequently many of the advanced Finance courses will have pre-reqs, which will be listed on the program schedule and the course record on the Student Service Centre (SSC).
Timetable: from the end of July onwards students will be able to view their class timetables on the Student Service Centre. Click on Course Schedule > Registration > Timetable. Click on the Timetable link to see an updated timetable, and also a button that allows students to download their class timetable as an iCal file that can then be imported into most calendaring software:
NOTES:
- Students are required to attend all classes and mandatory career professional development sessions during each Period.
- Dates for workshops, info sessions, make-up classes, and exams can change with limited notice. As such, it is expected that students do not book any travel to occur until after each Period’s exam week is completely finished.
- Exam schedules are subject to change so students are not to book any travel, appointments, interviews, etc. during exam week so time is reserved in case of emergency modifications.
Course Outlines
Please note that outlines are posted prior to the start of each period in order to help you with your registration choices, but the most up-to-date outline will be found on the respective course’s Canvas site.

Grade Requirements and Transcripts
Grade Requirements: The UBC MBA program has strict grading requirements for all courses, which may differ from what you are used to from your previous degree(s). Students must familiarize themselves with these grading requirements prior to the start of the MBA to understand the differences.
As an example, students are only permitted a limited number of “failed” (59% and below) and/or “minimal pass” (60-67%) grades in the MBA degree. If you exceed this limit, you will be withdrawn from the program.
To find out more about MBA program policies, please visit the Academic Regulations page.
Transcripts: UBC transcripts can be ordered via the Student Service Centre (SSC). You can have your transcript mailed to you or pick it up at Brock Hall.
Unofficial transcripts can be printed from the Grades & Records > Your Grades Summary page of the SSC.
Please note: the RHL Graduate School and the Business Career Centre cannot issue official or unofficial transcripts. More information on how to obtain your official transcripts can be found here.
Course Materials
Course packages & textbooks should be available at the UBC Bookstore or online, and your instructor will usually specify this on the course outline. From the bookstore homepage click on Textbooks > Order Today to get to this page: https://the.bookstore.ubc.ca/books/course-search. From here students can choose which courses they are registered in and see the materials available at the bookstore.
If the course is not on this list and the outline says that there are textbooks/course packs please contact askmba@sauder.ubc.ca so that we can follow up.

Peer Assisted Study Sessions
PEER ASSISTED STUDY SESSIONS (PASS)
The RHL is pleased to offer Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) for some of your foundation courses. Peer Assisted Study Sessions are highly interactive, 60-90 minute, small group sessions (3-12 people) that help students develop deeper knowledge of course content and practice effective, discipline-specific study strategies.
Sessions are led by year-two MBA students and are planned in consultation with course instructors and TA’s. Content is typically based on the previous week’s lecture material, but is flexible based on attendees’ needs.
Check your Canvas course sites for session times and topics, and to register for upcoming sessions.
Rules on the Use & Distribution of Course Materials
Any materials posted on Canvas course sites will be available for you to access and download for four weeks after the final exam.
As you will be using the intellectual property of external authors and/or UBC professors in your own studies, please be aware of the following rules around the handling and distribution of those materials:
- Cases and readings are protected under copyright law and therefore you must not share these documents with anyone. Any official publications that are posted on a Canvas course site have copyright clearance for students enrolled in this specific course only.
- Class slides are the instructor’s property and most instructors do not want their slides to be distributed. If you have questions about this, please approach your instructor directly.
- Exams/assignments/feedback must not be shared with students who may subsequently take the same course.
It is your responsibility to avoid copyright infringements and the distribution of materials that are intended for your use only.
Rules with Degree Progress
RHL students should use the designation “MBA in progress” on resume, LinkedIn, email signature, business signature, etc. As a student in a Professional Master program, the term “candidate” should not be used because candidacy is not an officially recognized degree program status at the Master’s level (it is intended for the doctoral level), based on UBC policy.
