Abstract

This inquiry project will be looking at whether the Sport Education Model (SEM) can be used to develop student leaders. The SEM is a curriculum and instruction model designed for physical education programs of all levels, which allows students to participate by taking on a specific role for the unit. Student leadership is based off of the Leadership Practices Inventory where leadership is defined as those who challenge the process, inspire a shared vision, enable others to act, model the way, and encourage the heart. The SEM model will be performed within grade 9 Physical Education Badminton unit. Students will be placed into teams, and each student will choose a role on the team for the whole unit. Students will be given a leadership self-assessment at the beginning of the unit and again at the end of the unit. The self-assessment will focus on their perceived leadership abilities as discussed as a class on day one, and again on the last class of the unit. One of the possible limitations of this inquiry is that if a student is new to badminton they will need to learn badminton and the SEM in one go. In order for the unit and inquiry to be successful students need to fulfill their roles, contribute and work as a team, develop game related strategies and knowledge, step outside of their comfort level in a controlled environment where they engage in safe physical activity.
