The application for the 2017-2018 LFS Major (Greater Than $10,000) Awards has been posted on the LFS website.  Please note that this application is also used for any current PhD student who wants to apply for a 4YF (refer to “Guidelines for Ranking and Reviewing 4YF Applicants”).

Please note the deadline to submit a completed application is Friday, July 14, 2017.  As we are working with a very tight timeline to ensure awards are assigned by early September, we cannot accept late or incomplete applications.

This message is to notify graduate programs of a recent change to how UBC withholds income tax for some student and postdoctoral fellowship appointments.

Specifically, effective 31 May 2017 onward, UBC will no longer automatically withhold income tax for appointments with the “FEL” (fellowships) earnings code. Those affected will continue to have their fellowship income reported via a T4A form each spring.

This change was prompted by a review of current UBC practice and the resulting conclusion that this change is necessary to bring UBC into compliance with Canada Revenue Agency tax policy.

This change will affect the following groups:

• Students with an NSERC USRA (Undergraduate Student Research Award) appointment
• Students with a Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) appointment
• Students with a Graduate or Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (GTA or UTA) appointment – 20% of GTA earnings are coded as fellowship earnings and tax will no longer be withheld against those earnings; tax will continue to be withheld against the remaining 80% (coded as regular earnings)
• Postdoctoral fellows supported by a competitive (award) fellowship (as opposed to a postdoctoral fellowship paid from a supervisor’s grant)

Though income tax will no longer be automatically withheld from fellowship earnings, students and postdoctoral fellows may request that tax be withheld by submitting a TD1 form (and a TD1BC form, if applicable) to UBC Payroll. The forms are to be submitted as original, hard-copy documents to the Payroll office (5th Floor- TEF3, 6190 Agronomy Road, Vancouver, BC V6T 1Z3).

The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies will match funds provided by graduate programs (to a maximum of $8,000 per student and to a maximum of $50,000 for the program in total) to support Master’s and doctoral Aboriginal students registered at the UBC-Vancouver campus for the 2017/18 academic year (i.e., from 1 September 2017 to 31 August 2018). This funding is intended to support students until they can apply for the next regular Aboriginal Graduate Fellowship competition. It is also intended to support students who were not successful in receiving other funding, such as Tri-Agency Master’s or doctoral awards, Affiliated Fellowships, etc., for the 2017/18 academic year. Award winners are selected on the basis of academic merit through a competition administered by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Environmental productivity of the Salish Sea: Two PhD student opportunities in ecological modelling at Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, The University of British Columbia

The two PhD student opportunities (PhDs) are to work on a research project at the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries (http://oceans.ubc.ca) conducted in cooperation with the Pacific Salmon Foundation (https://www.psf.ca). The study, Environmental Productivity Patterns of the Salish Sea, seeks to determine the primary factors affecting the survival of juvenile salmon and steelhead in the Salish Sea, and is conducted as part of the Salish Sea Marine Survival Project (SSMSP, http://marinesurvivalproject.com). This project seeks to understand how the environmental productivity of the Sea has changed over the half century along with the consequential impacts throughout the ecosystem.

One of the PhDs will be responsible for the development of a spatial ecosystem model of the Salish Sea based on the Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) approach and software, building on previous work in the area along with the extensive databases that have been built as part of the SSMSP (http://sogdatacentre.ca).

The other PhD will further develop an individual based model (IBM) of juvenile salmon survival and distribution patterns in the Salish Sea, which will obtain hydrographic and biogeochemical information from a GETM/FABM (http://www.getm.eu, https://sourceforge.net/projects/fabm/) model of the Salish Sea that will be built as part of the project as well as food web information from the EwE model that is being developed through the same overall activity.
