NutriSocial St. Patrick’s Day Event – Mar 18

NutriSocial will be having an event on Tuesday, March 18th from 4-5 in FNH 320. It will be St. Patrick’s day themed with games and the Shamrock Smoothie (a green veggie and fruit smoothie). It will be a free event with an opportunity for prospective execs for September 2014 to be nominated and elected. More information will be available on our Facebook page.

International Day of Forests Open House Event – Mar 21, 2014

 

Our friends in the Faculty of Forestry will celebrate next Friday, the International Day of Forests (March 21) with an open house event – a movie marathon, tree planting, etc. All students, staff, faculty members, researchers and anyone interested in forests is invited to join, if your schedule allows!

The highlight of the event – the documentary “MusicWood” (screening at 11:30 AM) – we’ve been promised some amazing acoustic guitar performances.

BC SPCA Wild ARC Internship Program 2014 – application deadline extended to March 17!

Looking to gain hands-on experience with wildlife? Interested in exploring a career in wild animal rehabilitation? Become a Wild ARC summer intern!

The BC SPCA Wild Animal Rehabilitation Center (Wild ARC) just outside of Victoria BC is currently recruiting for its Summer Internship Program. These two-month voluntary positions allow interns to gain hands-on rehabilitation experience with Vancouver Island’s diverse wildlife species including fawns, raccoons, squirrels, songbirds and raptors. This position is a great opportunity for anyone pursuing a career in veterinary medicine, veterinary technology, environmental, natural resource, or animal welfare studies.

Mar 17: 2014 LFS FROSH Planning Committee Positions – Apply now!

The LFS|US is looking for the help of LFS students with the planning process of the third annual LFS Frosh. The event is an opportunity to welcome incoming first year students to the faculty in this social, daylong event. The day will consist of various activities to allow first years to gain a sense of belonging within the faculty, to provide an opportunity to learn and grow as a student, and to network and bond with both first year and upper year level students within LFS.

AMS Community Kitchen – Open House Meeting, Mar 12, 2014

Want to learn more about the AMS Community Kitchen? We are hosting a drop-in, open house style meeting about the Community Kitchen in the New SUB. A student group from LFS 450 and AMS staff members will be there to discuss the management and programming for the new Community Kitchen. We are inviting people, clubs, or organizations who are interested in being a part of this project to join us during this time. The meeting is in the SUB, room 205, from 1pm to 4pm on Wednesday March 12th. People are welcome to stop by anytime during this window.

United Nations Academic Impact Essay Contest – deadline Mar 15

Many Languages, One World: United Nations Academic Impact Student Essay Contest

June 25-29, 2014

Winners participate in a 5 day International Youth Forum in New York and present their work at the United Nations Headquarters on June 27th

Airfare, room and board provided in New York.

Write an essay (2000 words or less) discussing the ideas of global citizenship and understanding and the role that multilingual ability can play in fostering these. Your essay should reflect your academic, cultural and national context.

Entries must be in an official language of the United Nations that is not the entrant’s first language or primary language of instruction in his or her primary or secondary education. Students must be full-time university students, sponsored by a Faculty Member or University Representative, and must be 18 years of age or older.

2014 Summer Session TA positions – application deadline Mar 21, 2014

There are a limited (approximately 15) number of TA positions available for 2014 Summer Session within LFS.  In order to be considered, you must complete an online application.  Please note that the application deadline is midnight, Friday, March 21st.   The job descriptions for the courses requiring TA support can be found here:  http://www.landfood.ubc.ca/graduate/ta  – Please filter by Term (Summer – Term 1 and Summer – Term 2).

If you are selected for a position, you will be contacted by the course instructor to discuss details of the position.  You will then receive a follow-up email which will include a contract and additional information.
