Health Professionals of Tomorrow Fair, volunteers needed – due Jan 24

Looking for something fun and rewarding to do during Reading Week? Love working with children? The Health Science Student Association (HSSA) is looking for volunteers for the annual Health Professionals of Tomorrow (HPT) Fair!

As a volunteer, you will be heading out to 2 elementary schools in Vancouver to teach kids about your health care career (or a career of your choice) through fun and interactive activities that you plan with other volunteers.

Dual Degree (BSc FNH and BEd Home Ec) application due – Jan 31

Do you remember Home Economics in high school? Applied Skills 8…Junior/Senior Foods…Textiles? Remember how FUN it was?! If you’re interested in a career in Education and Home Economics, this program is for you!

The Dual Degree concurrent program offers capable students to earn a BEd, Secondary degree alongside their BSc in Food, Nutrition and Health degree, all in five years. Successful students will graduate with both degrees at the same time and will be recommended for a Professional Teaching Certificate. 

Students may apply for admission to this program in Term 2 of Year 2. Admission requires an academic average of at least 65% (and maintained to remain in the program), as well as completion or in progress of completing ENGL 112 (or equivalent) and 3 credits of literature (ENGL 110, 120 or 121). Dual Degree students must also participate in school experience placements. The application deadline is January 31.

iKonnect 2014 Networking Event – Jan 21

iKonnect 2014 – the seventh annual healthcare networking event is happening Tuesday, Jan 21st 6-8pm at Ladha. You will get the chance to personally socialize with healthcare professionals from across BC – including doctors, pharmacists, dentists, physiotherapists, and more. Current students in those fields will also be available to answer questions about admissions and selection processes into programs like med school, pharmacy school, and not to mention, dietetics! You may be wondering, “Why is it called Aggie Week?”
Well, the Land and Food Systems used to be called “Agricultural Sciences”. It was one of the founding faculties of UBC in 1916 and ‘Aggies’ was a shortened term for ‘Agricultural’, mainly used colloquially. This was until an amalgamation occurred a number of years ago that combined a number of different faculties together, warranting a new name for the faculty.

Job Opportunity: Student Worker, UBC Dairy Education and Research Centre

The UBC Dairy Education and Research Centre is located in Agassiz, 130 km east of the UBC Point Grey Campus.  The farm is required to operate on a financially self-sustaining basis.  In addition to its operation as a fully functioning dairy (milk) production enterprise, the Centre plays a unique role as a centre for research, teaching, and technology transfer relating to dairy and forage production, agronomic crops and practices, and soils.  These activities involve active participation by faculty members and students from U.B.C. and other universities, government specialists, industry groups, and individuals.

A seasonal employment opportunity is available from May 1 to August 31. Preference will be given applicants with post-secondary education in agriculture an/or farm animal experience.

Volunteer opportunities for UBC Tax Assistance Clinic for Students (UBC TACS)

Are you confused about taxes? Do you want to learn how to file your income tax return and give back to the community? Join UBC TACS! UBC Tax Assistance Clinic for Students (UBC TACS) is a student-run organization that assists students and low-income individuals in tax return preparation from late February to the end of March. We are currently looking for student supervisors and volunteers to help our 1700+ clients file their income tax returns.

Applications are open to students from ALL faculties who are interested in learning more about filing personal income tax returns and are passionate about giving back. No experience in tax is required and training will be provided. This year, the clinic runs from February 25 to March 31, 2014.

– Gain relevant tax and accounting experience
