2015 Undergraduate Research Awards – submissions due May 29, 2015

There is an opportunity for UBC undergraduate students to apply to The 2015 Undergraduate Research Awards, an international competition based in Ireland whose aim is to celebrate and support the world’s brightest and most innovative undergraduate students, by enabling them to present their best coursework and projects.  Last year, UA received 94 entries from UBC students (out of a total 5000 entries from 27 countries).  UBC had one winner and six shortlisted students. 

This year’s submission deadline is May 29, 2015.

Opportunities to serve as judges:

New MFRE Entrance Scholarship for Canadian students – apply by Apr 30, 2015

NEW Entrance Scholarship Opportunity for Canadian Students. A new scholarship opportunity has just become available for outstanding students who have had first-hand experience in the food and/or agricultural sectors in Canada, and will contribute that experience to the MFRE program.  A separate application is not required.  Be sure to include your experience in the Canadian food or agricultural sectors when you apply for the MFRE program, and you will be automatically considered.

To be eligible for this scholarship, we need to receive your completed application form for the MFRE program by April 30, 2015. The amount of the scholarship is equal to the first tuition installment for a domestic student (approximately $6,600).

Save the Date! UBC Dairy Centre Open House – July 25

You are invited to the UBC Dairy Education and Research Centre open house on Saturday, July 25 from 9am-4pm. This is a great opportunity to meet student researchers and learn more about the Centre’s internationally renowned research and education programs in animal welfare, animal reproduction and resource recovery.

Throughout the day members of the Agassiz Farms Cycle Tour, a 25-km self-guided cycle tour that invites cyclists to explore the countryside and meet local farmers, will be stopping by. Visitors can also enjoy a glass of ice cold chocolate milk, donated by the BC Dairy Association, while supplies last.

Call for Abstracts: Food Science Research and Innovation Conference – due May 5, 2015

The 29th EFFoST International Conference will be held in Athens, Greece from 10-12 November 2015 under the theme: Food Science Research and Innovation: Delivering sustainable solutions to the global economy and society. The Conference will be organized by the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) on behalf of the European Federation of Food Science and Technology (EFFoST).

Abstracts for oral and poster presentations are invited on the topics below and should be submitted using the online submission system.

  • From basic research in Food Science and Engineering to sustainable process and product development
  • Novel processes for optimized conventional foods and optimization of classic processes for new products
  • Energy, water and waste reduction in the food chain from theory to the consumer
  • Food chemistry and material science for enhanced nutrition, health and pleasure

Western Association of Food and Drug Officials (WAFDO) Scholarship – deadline June 1

The Western Association of Food and Drug Officials (WAFDO) proudly continues the tradition of awarding a $2,000 scholarship to a deserving scholar enrolled in a college or university within the WAFDO region (Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, British Columbia, Alberta, Guam, North Mariana Islands, Mexico). In September 2015, we will be awarding one or possibly two $2000 scholarships, depending on availability of funds.

Candidates must

  • have entered their junior or senior year in the Fall 2015;
  • be enrolled in a college or university within the WAFDO region; and
  • be pursuing education in the career fields of environmental health science, food science, drugs or pharmacology, cosmetics or medical devices.

To apply for WAFDO’s 2015 J Jos Campioni Scholarship please submit the following no later than June 1, 2015:

  1. Complete application;
  2. A one-page essay detailing your interest and personal goals in the area of public health;
  3. One copy of your official college transcript; and
  4. At least two letters of recommendation.
