    EUREKA

For those who live at KU or Tec at Vanier, I found a way to close the room doors without locking it!

To fill everyone else in, the deal with our room doors is that they self lock when they close. There’s good (you never have to worry about forgetting to lock your door) and bad (you’ve locked yourself out so many times because you forgot to take the key when you go to the bathroom that the guy at the front desk in commonsblock knows you by your name). But sometimes the self lock is such a hassle, so why not take it off?

Okay, so everyone knows to turn the lock to the left to lock the door. But not many people know that turning the lock to the left takes off the self lock feature.

    KU door

Yes this is my EUREKA moment, does everyone else in KU or Tec already know about this?

On April Fool’s Day, make sure nobody is looking down the hall to see who leaves their room…

    XXI

I got attacked at forever 21 with clothes, insanely long lineups and booming ear deafening music. As many of you guys may know, this weekend was the grand opening of F21 at Metrotown. I went on open day, and it was INSANE! The store was packed, like sardines. Literally. You couldn’t move without bumping into someone. Piles and piles of clothes streamed across the room. Waiting in unorganized piles. Fashionistas of all ages swarm through the racks, each sifting through the piles hopeful to find some sort of unique item. The lineup was more than 2 hours long. (cant believe tessa waited, now thats a true love to fashion eh?) I miss the F21 in Edmonton, where the store is as empty as some girls’ wallets after this massive shopping weekend. I’ll definitely stop by Metro in a few weeks or so when this insanity, XXI, dies down.

lol. I know somebody who waited in that line-up. XD

      Insanity 😛

I think that is just what happens in Forever 21. My first experience was in New York this summer, where they had many branches scattered around the city and every single one I went into was full to the brim! Like you said, clothes scattered everywhere and huge lineups. Given, that was NY but still —

MEL ANG for CSP SOCIAL COORDINATOR

Yes I know you’ve seen a gazillion of these election blurbs across campus, on facebook, in the SUB, maybe even in your dreams?!? But here’s one more…because I’m running for CSP (Coordinated Science Program) Social Coordinator.

Sick of calling trips to Irving “socializing”?
Enter the CSP lounge, only to be greeted by a sea of unknown faces?
Looking for something better to do than voting E on the iClickers?

The solution: Vote for me, Mel, for CSP Social Coordinator and get ready for a wicked year of FUN events!

CSP yearbook? Ski trips? Chillax movie nights? Potluck? Dance?

For all this and more, vote MEL for Social Coordinator because I’m MEL-low.

((Don’t you love my catch phrase? Big thanks to Andrea.))

Speeches: Thursday morning at the beginning of Physics.

Vote: noon Thurs Oct 8 through midnight Friday Oct 9 on the CSPW 100 Vista course.

Results: Posted on Vista and sent to you by email, by the Tuesday morning.

Yes, you do have to be in CSP to vote, but show your support and join the fb group

    THANKS EVERYONE!!

    Vice-President, Students Emerging Leaders Program

Now try saying that 5 times really fast

This is about a week late. But nevertheless,

    Event: Commencement

To be honest with you, the word “Commencement” sounded kind of intimidating to me initially. Reminds me of graduation and all that fancy jazz. However within moments of arriving at Ponderosa Centre (bet you guys don’t know where this building is), I was so relief to find the atmosphere so chillax. Although the icebreakers were somewhat of a fail (sorry but “mingling” activity with that many people in a room was chaotic), the rest of the evening was lots of fun though. Free food + new people to meet + good conversations = VP Students Emerging Leaders Program Commencement. A very good combination.

Can’t wait to get started with the program. Also Go Global (students did presentations during commencement) seems like a good way to get involve overseas. I’m definitely checking out their booths in the SUB tomorrow. (I mean today, since it is 2am…again) & you should too!

    Rude Awakening @ 2am

It’s 2 am and I’m sitting in front of my freshly opened Calc textbook, desperately trying to finish 3 weeks worth of assignments in one night before the math quiz tomorrow. Smart eh?

I’m armed with my 1L bottle of Pepsi, a bag of munchies (hello freshman 15), a box of tissue (have you notice that everyone is sick lately?). I KNOW this is going to be one long night. This is what the accumulation of my laziness/slacking off/procrastinating/partying has left me with right now…

Advice for future university students: Don’t put anything off. I miss those HS days where I could procrastinate for weeks and still get high marks. Here it’s like you put something off for one day and next thing you know, that workload has triple…and you’re behind (again).

Here’s a rude awakening: Chem midterm next thursday?!? When did this happen? I feel like I haven’t even learnt anything… Definitely time to get into intense school mode.

      Hi Mel!
I hear you on the procrastination/getting behind thing. But I find doing exactly what you do, setting up at a table or area with a snack, drink, whatever you might need, at least forces your brain into work mode.

“Question 1… but wait, maybe I should get up and get something to eat…”

No. Because you already have it there. 😉

      Good luck on catching up!!

Going from high school to UBC is a HUGE change. You’re right; putting homework off till a quiz comes is a real pain.
Hopefully you did well on your quiz!

chem midterm already? why do professors do this to us already?

    I love UBC life

My arms ache from carrying my thick, hardcover Calc book around all day, just in case an opportunity arises to do some problems. My legs hurt from intense power walking from Vanier to Buchanan in less than 5 minutes. Since I thought 7:50 am was a good time to wake up for an 8 am class. My feet are soaked thanks to the puddles from the sprinklers behind Irving which seem to be on 24/7. I am deathly afraid of the raccoons who seem to be taking over UBC. They are everywhere. I am totally swamped by homework and it’s only the second week of classes.

But truth is, I LOVE UBC!

I love the campus! It’s ridiculously beautiful especially with the mountain view. I love rez life! Other than being 5 minutes away from all my science classes, everyone is so nice and there is always someone to hang out with. I love KU and how close it is to the caf. Seriously it’s like a short minute walk to get my Freshman 15. I love my classes! It’s quite a workload but I’m finally doing something I enjoy and not just taking classes for the sake of taking classes. I love Vancouver! Ooooh shopping and concerts and food. I love the UBC aquatic center and the fact that swimming is freeeee! I love first week & science frosh! I love UBC life!

    The Master Procrastinator

School hasn’t even begun but the master procrastinator is already hard at work.

This is what happens when you procrastinate: hanging out with people.

No, I am not a hermit. No, I don’t consider hanging out with people a chore. But with 2 months of summer, can you really blame me to think that there is plenty of time to spend quality time with each and everyone of my friends and family? So whenever someone wanted to catch a movie or go hiking, my reply would be “Of course, just not tonight. Let’s hang out before I leave for BC.” Well you can guess how the story goes…

    .

2 months quickly turned into 4 days and this is what my procrastination has left me with today:

    – 4 crammed days of social activities (poor me, eh?)

    – 3 um…frustrated friends whom I had to cancel on again. (Sorry guys, you know I still love you)

    – 2 empty suitcases waiting to be filled. (uh-oh)

    – 1 over tired, soon-to-be university student

    Lesson learned: stop procrastinating?!?

    …like that’ll ever happen.

    I’m finally LEGAL (in Alberta)

But do I feel more mature? Definitely not

Am I suddenly blessed with new found wisdom? Haha, I wish!

However according to the Alberta government, 18 years has provided me with enough experience to handle the big, bad world. That’s right, I can now go on field trips without parental consent. gasp!

More importantly, I can VOTE! All those time spent in politics based programs (Forum, MLA) has taken a toll on me & I am definitely very excited to finally get the chance to…exercise my legal right as a Canadian citizen, take part in a democracy…(insert the typical “why you should vote” curriculum they have drilled into our heads at school)

Also, I can now hit the clubbing scene and party like its nobody’s business. Hmm too bad I’m moving to BC in less than 1 week!!! (Speaking of which, I should maybe, possibly start thinking about actually packing)

Lastly, I can now emerge from the underground bingo scene. That’s right. Watch out old grandmas!

    Dum-dum-dum-dum: BACK TO SCHOOL!

Hmm, that title did not nearly have the effect I wanted it to. But you get the idea…dark, glooming music. Moving on…

My Mission: to find hot bikinis, beach totes and cute flip flops for the lake.

So picture me: Getting out of my car at the mall parking lot, all pumped for my weekend plans. And then BAM! I turn around and come face to face with this massive and disturbing sign at the mall entrance:

    Back To School

    BACK TO SCHOOL!

WHAAAT?!? Hold up, where did summer go? Is it just me or did this summer just pass by as quick as Brit and KFed’s marriage? (Yes, old news but I’m really out of the whole celeb gossip loop)

I guess in the midst of holiday trips, lazy days, backyard BBQs, parties and everything else fun in the sun, I just lost track of time. Even work has been amazing, since I work outdoors soaking up some sun (and yes, UV rays). But seriously, I could get use to this life.

Unfortunately, all good things come to an end (yes, I did just quote Nelly Furtado). The countdown is at 3 weeks, people! So let’s make every day count. Go ahead, squeeze in every last road trip, beach day, summer party and whatever else makes this summer so amazing! And I will see you in Vancouver very soon where the world of university with all nighters and midterms await us. (Sorry couldn’t resist ending with a little back to school preview)
