   Feeling overwhelmed by the climate crisis? Unsure where to start with sustainability, or which skills will matter in real-world jobs? This interactive workshop gives students practical tools to take meaningful action.
   
   You’ll learn the fundamentals of carbon accounting—how to measure, understand, and manage carbon emissions—and gain skills that can be applied in any organization or project. Whether you want to reduce emissions for a student club, for a company you’re interning with, or better understand your own personal carbon footprint, this is the perfect place to start.
   
No technical background required. This workshop is ideal for students interested in business and climate, and gaining practical skills that employers are looking for.

We hope you are off to a good start this term! This message includes information about your midterm schedule, the academic concession policy, and academic integrity during exams. All exams follow UBC policies and regulations—make sure you are prepared and understand your responsibilities before you write your exam.

When are my midterms?    
Review your course outlines for midterm times and locations. If you are unclear about the exam arrangements for your course, contact your instructor as soon as possible.    

What should I do if I am unable to write my midterm?    
If you are unable to write an exam due to circumstances that are included in the UBC Academic Concession policy, you may be eligible to submit a petition for an academic concession.      

1. Consult your course syllabus for any instructions provided by your instructor. 
2. Review information on submitting a petition for an academic concession at https://blogs.ubc.ca/myubcdap/success/responsibilities/#section-1.
3. Submit your petition to OSAS by filling out the form on https://professional.sauder.ubc.ca/dap/students/academic-concession.cfm . You are expected to submit your petition as soon as possible and within 48 hours of the missed midterm.  

What do I need to know about academic integrity?    
All Commerce exams start with an Integrity Pledge. Academic integrity will be enforced in all exams. By writing a UBC exam, you agree to adhere to the University’s standards for academic honesty. It is your responsibility to review and abide by the rules described in the following sources:      

• The Student Declaration 
• The Academic Honesty and Standards 
• The Student Conduct During Examinations 
• And any special rules for conduct as set out by the examiner    

Suspected instances of academic misconduct will be thoroughly investigated and are subject to disciplinary measures. More information about the academic integrity practices, procedures, and resources to support students at UBC Sauder can be found in the Student Academic Integrity Handbook.      
   
Are there other recommendations I should follow?     

• Get to your midterm exam early!   
• Bring your digital or physical UBC card to your midterm.   
• Double-check the course syllabus or ask your instructor what items are allowed in the midterm.    
• If you are writing exams on Canvas, do the Online Exam Tech Check (https://canvas.ubc.ca/enroll/RK33KJ).   
• Read all instructions and questions carefully.    
• Keep track of the time and don’t forget to submit the exam when finished.    
• If you sit your exam, you are no longer eligible to defer it or to submit a petition for academic concession for it. You will not be given another opportunity to increase your mark. Review the academic concession policy for details.   

Where can I find mental health and wellness supports?    
In addition to studying, maintaining your physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing is essential to achieving success. We encourage you to take advantage of the many resources available at students.ubc.ca/health.

2025 Intergenerational March to Commemorate Orange Shirt Day – September 30th
The Faculties of Land and Food Systems and Forestry are honoured to host this intergenerational March, welcoming the UBC community, families, and allies. The event aims to educate and support the Indigenous community on campus and beyond, with activities helping younger participants connect with the original inhabitants of the land.

Ahead of the March, don’t miss The Path Forward, a free VSO concert on September 28th featuring UBC Sauder’s Dennis Thomas-Whonoak, a member of the VSO Indigenous Council. Your attendance at both events shows solidarity with Indigenous communities and a commitment to reconciliation.

We are now accepting applications for the following 2025 Winter Session awards:

• 1500 BDO Canada LLP Service Award, 1 award valued at $2750
  A service award endowed by BDO Canada LLP to recognize a student in the Diploma in Accounting Program (DAP), made on the recommendation of the Sauder School of Business to a part-time or full-time student who is enrolled in the DAP Program and demonstrates high levels of community service and volunteerism within the university or community. Award candidates must also demonstrate high academic standing in the DAP Program.
• 1661 Chartered Accountants Education Foundation Jim Miller DAP Scholarship, 1 award valued at $2500
  Awarded on the recommendation of the School to a part-time or full-time student who is enrolled in the DAP Program. Award candidates must have high academic standing and leadership ability, and intend to become a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA)

To be eligible for consideration of these awards, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Be enrolled in 2025 Winter Session courses
• Have completed a minimum of 9 credits by the end of Summer Term 2 (August 2025), with a minimum 75% average.

To apply, please submit the following documents by September 30, 2025:

• DAP Scholarships and Awards Application Form
• Your resume
• Two reference letters on the business letterhead with contact information from professional contacts in support of your community and/or leadership experience. Please note, these are non-academic references.

The UBC Sauder School of Business values the enhancement of the student experience and has committed to providing funding to support students in their professional skill development and student-led initiatives.Grants are available to current BCom, DAP, and BUCS students to cover up to 1/3 of the cost for a variety of experiences (up to $2000), including but not limited to:

1. Participate in a volunteer or service-learning program
2. Compete in a case competition locally, nationally or internationally
3. Attend a conference locally, nationally or internationally
4. Organize a new event, program or service that benefits other students

Applicants are required to demonstrate in their application the impact this experience will have on their personal, professional, or academic experience, or that of other Sauder students.

The UBC Sauder School of Business has a limited amount of funding allocated for each term. The review committee will determine the amount of funding offered to you based on a variety of factors including the impact of the funding, the benefit to students, the total cost of the experience/initiative, and funds available. Successful applicants may not receive the full amount requested.

Successful applicants will be required to submit a photo and a letter of impact outlining the skills they developed through the funded experience.If granted funding, individual applicants and clubs/services are not permitted to apply again for a minimum of two academic years.
