Family Studies

This program offers a life-course perspective to understanding families and other intimate relationships as they develop over time. This incorporates both the study of family in diverse contexts and the predictable ways families change

How can it be useful?

Knowledge on family structure and interactions is valuable in a wide range of fields, from social work, education, non-profit work, and the health-related field.

What sociology courses can be applied?

This minor allows for the inclusion of various lower and upper-level Sociology courses, and requires SOCI 320 and 415. More information on specific requirements can be found here. 

Law and Society

The Law and Society Minor provides students an opportunity to understand law as a social phenomenon that is central to the organization of social relations and social life in specific contexts through an multidisciplinary lens. Students explore the dynamics of law and society around the world and through time by various methods and modes of analysis.

How can it be useful?

This program is great preparation for work or further education in a wide variety of fields including law, business, non-profits, education, health, and the public sector.

SOCI 250, 301, 310, 369, 470 as well as certain Sociology prerequisites

Health and Society

Examine the interaction of health, illness, and society. This minor will allow you to explore issues such as social inequalities and their impact on health, and the health care system and its effects.

How can it be useful?

Health and Society is applicable to a wide range of careers in the health-related field and beyond. This minor is also great preparation for those intending to go to med school. Med school applications now have begun to place a stronger emphasis on applicants’ understanding of the social and behavioral sciences, and have even added it as a new section on the MCAT. Minoring in Healthy and Society is a valuable way to prepare yourself for success in that area.

Environment and Society

Examine the interaction of humankind and our planet, the effects we have on it, and the political, economic and social strategies that can be employed in managing our interaction with the environment. This program focuses more prominently on the human aspect of human-environment interactions.

How can it be useful?

The environment and our effect on it is an ever increasing global issue. Knowledge on the current effects, problems, and solutions is a valuable source in todays job market, and can be applicable to a wide range of fields.

Critical Studies in Sexuality

Critical studies in sexuality allows students to explore how all forms of sexuality from the perspective of a wide variety of disciplines, including History, English, Sociology, Visual Arts, Psychology, Education, Social Work, and Law.

How can it be useful?

This minor will allow students to improve their skills in critical thinking and have a strong knowledge on many of the cultural issues facing todays society. These skills will hold value in many different fields, from Law, Medicine, Education, First Nations studies, and more.

What sociology courses can be applied?

This minor offers flexibility in the applicability of lower and upper-level Sociology courses, depending on their content and approval by a CSIS program advisor.
