A Christmas Surprise

The Secretary General of “Si Cumple”, the electoral machine connected to Alberto Fujimori, has announced that the former president will return to Peru in December 2005.

According to Luis Delgado Aparicio, Secretary General of “Si Cumple”, Fujimori will return to Peru via New York in December 2005. The Peruvian authorities want Fujimori to be extradited in connection to two massacres in the 1990s and to illicit payments made to Vladimiro Montesinos, the chief of intelligence during Fujimori’s two terms in office. The problem is that there is an outstanding order for the arrest of Fujimori issued by INTERPOL.
(For the full story, see “‘Cargos contra Fujimori no convencen a Japon’ Secretario General de Si Cumple asegura que el ex mandatario regresaria al Peru en diciembre.” El Comercio, 24 June 2005).
The announcement followed a Supreme Court decision to “archive” (i.e. drop) charges against Fujimori for falsifying over 1 million signatures to register his party, Peru 2000, for the elections in 2000. The charges were archived due to “lack of evidence.” This decision ratified an earlier decision, in October 2000, that was dictated by the court when it was controlled by Vladimiro Montesinos, Fujimori’s security advisor and de facto head of the intelligence service.
The recent Supreme Court decision was met with derision by member of the governing coalition, and glee by Fujimori’s supporters.
