OAS Mission to Peru Receives Funding from Korea
KOREA PRESENTS A DONATION TO THE OAS FOR ELECTORAL OBSERVATION MISSION IN PERU

The government of Korea provided a $20,000 contribution to support the work of the Organization of American States (OAS) in monitoring the regional and municipal electoral process underway in Peru. The OAS Electoral Observation Mission, headed by Moisés Benamor, Principal Specialist with the Secretariat for Political Affairs, has been in the Andean nation since the beginning of this month to follow the electoral process that concludes on November 19.
During a brief ceremony at OAS headquarters, the Assistant Secretary for Political Affairs, Dante Caputo, accepted the donation on behalf of Secretary General José Miguel Insulza .
In thanking the Republic of Korea for its support, Caputo explained that “little by little, electoral observation has become our most important task, and we are proud because we are doing it very well.” He underscored the importance of continuing to receive such contributions, which allow the OAS to carry out this specialized type of mission.
For his part, Korea’s Alternate Observer to the OAS, Chong-on Won, pointed out the significant role played by the regional organization and said the presence of international observers in these elections will mean greater guarantees “that satisfy the demands of the Peruvian people.” The Korean diplomat reiterated his country’s commitment to help promote the strengthening of democracy in Latin America, stressing his confidence that this electoral process will be “as free, neutral and transparent” as the many others observed by the OAS this year.
During today’s ceremony, the Interim Representative of Peru to the OAS, Ambassador Carlos Zapata, and the Director of the OAS Department for the Promotion of Democracy, Elizabeth Spehar, also conveyed their gratitude for the donation.
Korea was one of the first Asian countries to join the OAS as a permanent observer in 1981. In the past years, the country has donated some $1 million to support various OAS areas.

El gobierno de Corea formalizó hoy una contribución de 20.000 dólares para apoyar el trabajo de observación que la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA) realiza para las elecciones regionales y municipales en Perú. La Misión de Observación Electoral de la OEA, encabezada por Moisés Benamor, Especialista Principal de la Subsecretaría de Asuntos Políticos, se encuentra en el país andino desde principios del mes, monitoreando el proceso electoral que culminará el próximo 19 de noviembre.
Durante una breve ceremonia en la sede del organismo hemisférico, el Subsecretario de Asuntos Políticos de la OEA, Dante Caputo, aceptó la donación en nombre del Secretario General José Miguel Insulza.
Al agradecer el apoyo del gobierno coreano, Caputo explicó que “poco a poco, esta tarea de observación electoral se ha convertido para nosotros en la más importante y nos sentimos orgullosos porque la estamos haciendo bastante bien”. Subrayó la necesidad y la importancia de poder continuar recibiendo tales contribuciones que permiten a la OEA llevar adelante esta labor especializada.
Por su parte, el Observador Alterno de Corea ante la OEA, Chong-on Won, destacó el significativo rol del organismo regional y dijo que la presencia de los observadores internacionales en estos comicios representa mayores garantías “que satisfacen las demandas del pueblo peruano”. El diplomático coreano manifestó el compromiso de su país en promover el fortalecimiento de la democracia en América Latina, enfatizando su confianza en que este proceso electoral será “tan libre, neutro, y transparente” como tantos otros observados por la OEA durante el transcurso del año.
Asistieron a la ceremonia de hoy el Representante Interino del Perú ante la OEA, Embajador Carlos Zapata, y la Directora del Departamento para la Promoción de la Democracia de la OEA, Elizabeth Spehar, quienes también expresaron sus respectivos agradecimientos por dicha donación.
Corea fue una de los primeras naciones asiáticas en adherirse a la OEA como Observador Permanente, en 1981. En los últimos años, ese país ha donado un total de un millón de dólares en el apoyo a diferentes áreas sustantivas de la Organización.
