Strategy #3: What? So What? Now What?

What? So what? Now what? (Barrett, 2000)

Think of a sample or artifact that you would include in your efolio. Answer the following three questions about the sample:

  • What? This answers fundamental questions about the sample. What is it? When was it created or used? Who was involved? Where was it used?
  • So what? This answers questions about purpose and intent. Why is this sample important? What did you learn from this sample?
  • Now what? This answers questions about future action. How will this sample inform future practice? What would you do differently?

As you engage in reflective thinking and writing, think about your audience. Who will you be sharing your thoughts with? Your audience might be your instructor(s), a small peer group, or a hiring principal or department head. Or anyone interested in who you are!
