Doctor of Philosophy in School and Applied Child Psychology

The Ph.D. program in School and Applied Child Psychology at UBC is a 4 to 5 year program (post M.A.) designed for students who have completed a M.A. in School and Applied Child Psychology (or the equivalent to the UBC School and Applied Child Psychology M.A.) who want to work as a psychologist at the doctoral level and obtain registration as a psychologists at the doctoral level. The program is full time with three years of on campus study including courses, practicum, research, comprehensive examinations, and dissertation. Student complete their 12-month long (1600 hour) Pre-doctoral internship in Year 4 unless they elect to spend an additional year on campus in Year 4 to focus on dissertation research. Students in the Ph.D. program, as full time students, are expected to engage in professional activities outside of their required courses and practicum including, but not limited to, participation in lab meetings, research, conference and inservice presentations, on and off campus seminars, manuscript writing, grant writing, and university teaching. The program prepares students for eligibility as certified school psychologists and registration as a psychologist. Ph.D. graduates go on to careers in a wide array of settings including universities (teaching, research, supervision), schools, community agencies, developmental clinics, and private practice.
