It is required that all doctoral students at UBC be admitted to candidacy within 36 months from the date of their initial registration. A student who is not admitted to candidacy within this time period will be required to withdraw from the program. Extensions may be granted under exceptional circumstances with the permission of the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Post Doctoral Study. A rationale for the request must completed and turned in to G+PS for approval at least one month in advance of the deadline to reach candidacy.
The basic requirements for a doctoral student to be admitted to candidacy are:
1) all required coursework has been successfully completed
2) the comprehensive examination has been passed
3) the supervisory committee has certified that the dissertation proposal has been approved.
Students are expected to complete their comprehensive examinations within 24 months from the date of initial registration.
