Ph.D. Practicum

EPSE 661: Doctoral Practicum in School & Applied Child Psychology
Students in the Ph.D. program complete required practicum, EPSE 661 (pending course approval by UBC Senate) in Year 1 (September through June) and Year 2 (September through April) of their program (300 hours minimum each year). In Year 1 students should plan for at least 1.5 days per week of devoted practicum time including a school-based practicum placement with a focus on individual and group intervention, advanced assessment, and consultation (September through June). They will also work closely with M.A. students by supervising and working collaboratively with them on some activities including initial psychological assessments. Students will also engage in class based supervision activities for master’s assessment and intervention courses. In Year 2 students will continue to devote 1 to 1.5 days per week in practicum activities including a practicum placement in a community agency (non-school based) setting. They will continue to engage in some case supervision of Master’s students and have the option of conducting additional advanced assessment or intervention cases at the PRTC. Note that agency contact (school and non-school) all practicum placements for students in EPSE 661 is initiated by the Practicum Coordinator. Students should not arrange practicum placements without first consulting with the Practicum Coordinator. Placements are planned in the spring and summer and begin in September and run typically run through April or June.

EPSE 687: Advanced Practicum in School & Applied Psychology: Specialty Placement
Students who have successfully completed their EPSE 661 practicum, have completed their comprehensive examinations and are making satisfactory progress in their coursework and research may elect to complete additional advanced practicum experiences in Year 3 of their Ph.D. to gain additional supervised experiences in areas where they would like to develop more skill and specialization. Students must work wth the Practicum Coordinator in arranging a practicum placement and should not arrange a placement on their own. Places for the upcoming year are typically discussed and arranged in the spring or summer before beginning a placement in the fall. Any practicum placement must include appropriate supervision with supervision typically conduced by an on site supervisor. All students must work with the Practicum Coordinator and their field supervisor to complete a practicum plan which includes goals, objectives, and an evaluation plan. Sample practicum plans and the practicum evaluation are provided in the Forms section of the blog. A more detailed overview of the EPSE 687 practicum experience and recent practicum placement is provided below.
