Marketing Blog Post #6 Reflection

This group assignment provides me with a great opportunity to work in an effective team setting, in which we all contribute to the overall success of the project. During the process of brain storm, we gather ideas and put them together so that we can think deeply afterwards and come up with more meaningful questions and answers. During the process of research, I collect information from not only the official website of Mountain Equipment Co-op, but also the most updated peer reviewed journals, in order to get their brand culture, I learn how to apply the concepts and ideas discussed in class into real life cases, for example, how to identify the 4Ps in this company, and analyze how its products, prices, place, and promotion should be set in order to achieve the best marketing result. I also learn how to best organize a team so that each team member can woke on the part that he or she is best at, and in this way, we all present the best possible work that can be completed individually. There should always be a person in a team to on the part that he or she is best at, and in this way, we all present the best possible work that can be completed individually. There should always be  a person in a team to check on these individual work and do the final editing.
What I will probably do next time is to think more out of the box during the process of brain storm. I feel that we are restricted to the marketing concepts and theories, for example, in this case MEC has instituted measures relating to Corporate Social Responsibility. This enables them to give back to the society through measures such as employment to the youths in the area and holding events that further enhances the bond. MEC has introduced  grants to the residents, and offers scholarships to them as well as fronting for their fundamental rights. We may explore its marketing strategy through this perspective,as I believe marketing is deeply rooted in the daily operation of the company and also in the company’s overall strategy.
My top takeaways are that the company’s overall goals and objectives, products and services are presented clearly in the video. People who watch the video would be able to identify what MEC has done to satisfy the customers’ need and how it has attracted more people to purchase. MEC has crafted a Five-year strategic plan centered on product improvement, service and improving performance of the services offered. Many have sought to know; what really sets MEC at the top scale, in sustainability assessment.
Looking through their performance trend, one will notice highs on literary all their descriptions. They have managed to improve their product brands, drive activities that preserve favorable climatic conditions and ensure that their stakeholders are contented with the progress. This inspires me to craft a five-year strategic plan of my own life, and achieve these goals one by one.

Here is the blog post linking to and commenting on a fellow Comm 296 classmate’s blog post at https://blogs.ubc.ca/cole/

The title of the blog is Making a Successful YouTube Channel.

YouTube allows people to easily upload and share video clips on the Internet through websites, blogs and emails. It is easy and fast, has nice interface and quick streaming. Other than sharing information, another great feature of YouTube is that it offers a two-way communication system to its users. People can not only watch videos but also post their responses and feedback. By reading the responses and ratings, people save time in deciding whether this video is what they are looking for and picking up only those they really want. I find the content of this blog is very useful and objective. This blog provides accurate information with no advertising and the author is very objective in presenting the information leaving places for visitors to make comments. The author clearly states all the factors that are necessary to make a successful YouTube channel, and remember to keep them in order.

The author mentions in the blog that the most important factor is context. I agree that content is very important, but i think clarifying the goal of creating the channel is more important. One can use YouTube to promote products and services, introduce new concepts and ideas of certain products, and getting feedback from potential consumers,  and one can also use YouTube to demonstrate their existing products, which is not only cost-effective for them, but also benefits consumers a lot, for example, many products require installation by consumers themselves and it is usually hard to figure out how to put the pieces together from the manual instructions that come along with the product itself. Some smart enterprises upload installation demonstration YouTube videos and make it easily accessed online, which makes it much easier for consumers to figure out how to put them together and consumers’ loyalty to their brand is therefor greatly enhanced. Only when we are clear about what our goal is could we establish a channel that best illustrate our intention.

GIA (Global Industry Analysts, Inc.) announces the release of a comprehensive global report on the Children’s Wear markets. The global market for Children’s Wear is projected to reach US$156.8 billion by the year 2015, driven by the frequent need to purchasing new clothing to address the requirements of growing children. Rising income levels, trend towards nuclear families, and parental desire to offer the best to their children is likely to foster market growth.

Children’s wear market is among the most lucrative segments in the global apparel industry.  Though the global economic meltdown has significantly affected growth prospects in the retail industry, the children’s wear segment has exhibited considerable resilience to the adverse market conditions, as against the men’s wear and women’s wear categories. The market is influenced by factors such as transforming consumer preferences, customer profiles, parents and children’s influence on buying patterns, and availability of greater choice. Future growth in the market is also dependent on factors such as brand-related investment, design elements, and ethical developments.

In order for a kids’ wear company to succeed in China, there are internal and external factors that need to be considered. The internal factors include the multi-culture management, offering fashionable products, availability of greater choice, design elements of the current trend of North American, the programs of product development, gift shopping trend and low-price marketing. External factors influenced by the factors such as the requirements of growing children population in China, income levels and disposable income of customers are rising, the consumers favor foreign brands of apparel, develop new strategies through high technology and cooperation, parental desire to offer the best to their children, children play a significant role in influencing parental decisions pertaining to purchase of kids wear, and knowledge among the parents and children about brands and broadened their perspectives.

Marketing Blog Post #2

As I always believe, marketing is a persuasive process. As a consumer, I find myself always want to try new things, and many times I will just make a purchase decision when I see the persuasive packages of foods in local super store.

When looking around my house, I find two food packages that I believe use the most persuasive techniques of marketing. The first is called Vaalia kids vanilla yogurt. Since this product targets kids, this package is designed to be attractive to kids with very bright and vivid color. Children are always easily fascinated by the colourful packages and would like to ask their parents to buy anything that makes them look cool and different. Other than this, the package also clearly highlights the selling points of this product. In the front of the package, there is a focus on Omega3 and DHA and kids benefits for “function and concentration”. There is also an outstanding highlight of “packed with goodness” with a simple smiley face, which delivers a happy mood. The information delivered by the package is clear and easy to understand. Its nutritional benefits are stated in an easy and simple tone. For example, instead of just printing the legally required nutrition panel, there is statement such as “Protein for growing bodies” and “Calcium for strong bones and teeth”. In this way, this package not only attracts kids, but also persuades parents who are the purchase decision makers.

The other food package that uses persuasive techniques is a box of Lindt Chocolate. Generally speaking, I think the design of this package is very charming and beautiful. With an impressive red color as the background, the consumers always feel refreshed and cheered up when seeing this box. With the brand name “lindt” printed in art word in the center of the box, there is a fancy picture of melting chocolate surrounding the words which allows the consumers to imagine how smooth the chocolate will be when melted in their mouths. The combination of pictures and art words gives consumers a feeling full of warmness, encouraging them to buy one or two boxes to celebrate their perfect day or give out as gifts

Nokia Expands Apology for Misleading or Faked Lumia 920 Video, Photos

Misleading advertising claims is one of the major ethical issues aroused in marketing, which may be based on people’s ignorance in a specific field. Its consequences are serious. Revealed misleading advertising claims can cause damage to the reputation of a firm while unrevealed misleading advertising claims can create negative impact of different level on customers.

Nokia demonstrates that the Lumia 920 features the “PureView” camera capable of letting users take sharp photos and video with its  “floating lens” optical image stabilization (OIS) technology.  However it used faked video and photos to publicize the company’s newest flagship phone, resulting in denouncement and criticism from many bloggers and customers. How could this happen?

As explained by Brett Young told Mashable,  “The video was produced while the Nokia Lumia 920 was in early prototype and still not ready to show the full benefits of the amazing innovation it contains.” Later Nokia revealed that the promotional photos were also faked. Probably as apologized by Nokia, it’s just a simulation but it still creates misleading effects. If the video was produced before the production of Nokia Lumia 920, it means that Nokia is so anxious for success, eager to win market share. The potential eager to take or win market could lead to misleading advertising claims. Besides, also many of us cannot even realize the differences between videos and phones taken by Nokia Lumia 920 or not. People’s ignorance of a specific, especially high-tech area, always provides chances for organization to create misleading advertising claims. Therefore, in my opinion, organizations’ desire or eager to take market share or peoples’ ignorance of specific knowledge lead to the potential of misleading advertising claims.

The abortion of misleading advertisement could negatively influence an organization’s reputation and consequently its sales. Leaders in organizations should establish high level of marketing ethics. Besides government and people who realize misleading advertising claims should reveal and castigate such behavior.
