Nokia Expands Apology for Misleading or Faked Lumia 920 Video, Photos

Misleading advertising claims is one of the major ethical issues aroused in marketing, which may be based on people’s ignorance in a specific field. Its consequences are serious. Revealed misleading advertising claims can cause damage to the reputation of a firm while unrevealed misleading advertising claims can create negative impact of different level on customers.

Nokia demonstrates that the Lumia 920 features the “PureView” camera capable of letting users take sharp photos and video with its  “floating lens” optical image stabilization (OIS) technology.  However it used faked video and photos to publicize the company’s newest flagship phone, resulting in denouncement and criticism from many bloggers and customers. How could this happen?

As explained by Brett Young told Mashable,  “The video was produced while the Nokia Lumia 920 was in early prototype and still not ready to show the full benefits of the amazing innovation it contains.” Later Nokia revealed that the promotional photos were also faked. Probably as apologized by Nokia, it’s just a simulation but it still creates misleading effects. If the video was produced before the production of Nokia Lumia 920, it means that Nokia is so anxious for success, eager to win market share. The potential eager to take or win market could lead to misleading advertising claims. Besides, also many of us cannot even realize the differences between videos and phones taken by Nokia Lumia 920 or not. People’s ignorance of a specific, especially high-tech area, always provides chances for organization to create misleading advertising claims. Therefore, in my opinion, organizations’ desire or eager to take market share or peoples’ ignorance of specific knowledge lead to the potential of misleading advertising claims.

The abortion of misleading advertisement could negatively influence an organization’s reputation and consequently its sales. Leaders in organizations should establish high level of marketing ethics. Besides government and people who realize misleading advertising claims should reveal and castigate such behavior.
