Does life get better?

Perhaps one of the most tell-tale signs of depression is the feeling of hopelessness and a pessimistic outlook of life. If this is the case, is it possible that depressed individuals believe that life will eventually get better?

Yes – it is possible. A new study led by scientists at Brock University of Canada suggests that even depressed individuals believe in the possibility of having a more satisfactory life in the future. Although this may seem hopeful, it is not yet known whether depressed people actually believe that this improved life is achievable or whether it is simply wishful thinking. Also, it may be possible that this optimistic view is an indicator a higher risk for depression. Why? Perhaps depressed individuals are not setting realistic goals. Understanding this may suggest new approaches in psychological counselling and therapy. Clinicians can use this belief of a better life to help patients develop more concrete and achievable plans.

Instead of assuming that hopeful people have no risk of depression, perhaps we should pay closer attention to their goals and beliefs. Sometimes a little reminder or redirection is all that it takes to keep a friend off the path of depression.
