Association between Vitamin D Deficiency and SAD

Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with increased risk of health problems such as asthma, cancer, and chronic pain, but did you know that it may be associated with seasonal affective disorder as well? Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that usually occurs in the winter. The symptoms include sadness, anxiety, fatigue, and difficulty with concentration. It has been found that SAD is more common in people who live in areas with less sunlight, making it reasonable to associate Vitamin D deficiency with the risk of SAD. Here inĀ  Vancouver, we really don’t get much sun in the winter months. Therefore, SAD may be of concern to those of us living in this area. Let us cherish every moment of sunshine we have during the colder seasons and make sure we get our Vitamin D!
