Budgeting 101: Not breaking bank

By Jonathan Chan, Gage Residence Advisor

Tired of (illegally) photocopying entire textbooks, wearing wet socks from inadequately air-drying wet laundry and still having a credit score that is less than your score on an average bowling game? Well, there’s no escaping these things if you want to budget your money! However, here are a few other ways to save money by increasing savings and reducing expenses.

1.) Make a shopping list and stick to it. While shopping, buy cheaper store or generic brands rather than brand names and try to find coupons or look for deals before going to out to buy groceries. No frills is great if you haven’t checked it out before.

2.) Drink water instead of coke or other expensive drinks.

3.) If you’re paying for your own cell phone bills, then look into getting a retention plan. Check redflagdeals.ca for more information on this topic and huge savings on other things. Make sure to get a cell phone plan tailored to your calling habits.

4.) Sell your extra clothes or donate them to a consignment store and find a new set of threads while you’re there for a frugal, yet hip look.

5.) If you love frequenting movies, wait until Tuesday to watch the movie, as most theaters have cheaper rates on this day of the week.

6.) Borrow your books from the library. Many textbooks, movies and music may also be found online.

7.) Get a thermos and brew your own coffee. If there are other coffee drinkers in your unit, then you can split the costs.

8.) Bring and pack your lunches to save up to five dollars every time you do this!

Enjoy walking around in dry socks again!
