Getting ready for move out

By Johanna Webber, Residence Life Manager

The semester is almost done and in a few weeks Gage will empty out and close as a student residence and re-open as a conference centre.  That means that 1350 students will pack their rooms, clear their shelves and move.

It’s something that looming in the near future.  The best way to prepare for move out is to take some time and evaluate when items you have and what you need by:

  1. Reviewing the clothes in your closet:  There are two stuff swaps coming up (watch for posters.)  Anything that isn’t swapped will be donated to charity.
  2. Recycling: Work with your roommates to keep up to date with the recycling. That way when the end of the year comes, you won’t have a lot to take down.
  3. Considering what you are purchasing: Now is a good time to use the groceries that you have so that at the end of the year, you won’t have a lot left over.  Evaluate if you need to buy more at this time of the year.

This is also a good time to begin to collect boxes and prepare for your move.  Just remember that at the end of April, many other residents will also be going to the liquor store and  grocery store in search of boxes.  The early bird catches the worm.

  1. I have an exam on the 25th, do I still have to move out on the 26th? Seems like an arbitrary day to do the move out, and it’s going to make my exam schedule more stressful having to get all that ready at the same time..

    • Hi Craig: Yes, the residence contract ends on April 26th.

The following residents may be eligible for a Residence Contract Extension, if they apply for a contract extension by April 15, 2012.

      1. Residents holding confirmed, pre-paid travel arrangements. You may be required to provide proof of confirmed, prepaid travel arrangements.
      2. Residents moving to off-campus housing where their rental agreement commences no later than May 1, 2012. You may be required to show a copy of the off-campus rental agreement.

Residents who have an accepted Summer/Stay-through room offer do not need to apply for a Residence Contract Extension. Residents living in a residence area such as Fairview Crescent which is used for summer housing, may not necessarily be approved for a contract extension.

Residents requesting to stay in residence beyond 12:00 noon, April 26, 2012 must meet the eligibility requirements listed above and apply on-line by April 15, 2012 for a Residence Contract Extension. There is an additional daily room fee for contract extensions. The latest date that you may extend your current residence contract is 12 noon, May 1, 2012. The terms of the current Residence Contract remain active for the duration of the authorized extension to the Residence Contract Extension.

Daily Room Fees for Contract Extensions:
      Gage $40 per night

      Gage Apartments $45 per night
Gage Apartments One Bedroom units $50 per night

Please follow these instructions to apply for a residence contract extension:
Go to https://secure.housing.ubc.ca. Then, login using your Campus Wide Login. Go to ?Prospective Residents > Application > Apply > Vancouver campus – 2012 Extension / Early Arrival (12E).
After you apply for a contract extension, you will be sent an e-mail confirmation and the amount that you owe. Fees must be paid by the due date in your confirmation. Should fees not be paid by the due date, your contract extension will be withdrawn and cancelled.

      Hope this helps!
