Immerse yourself in a classic North West Legend featuring incredible and original illustrations by world-renowned printmaker, painter, carver, author, Roy Henry Vickers. Peace Dancer is the fourth book in a series by Roy Henry Vickers and Robert Budd. Vickers shares the Legend from his village of Kitkatla, BC; the story of The Flood. This event is part of UBC Reads Sustainability, a speaker series on issues that matter.

Student Lunch & Learn | Building Innovations: Brock Commons – the Tall Wood House  Date: February 27th Time: 12-1pm Location: BC Hydro Theatre, CIRS Join us over lunch and explore the innovative and sustainable approaches used to design and construct the currently tallest hybrid mass timber structure in the world – Brock Commons. Brock Commons – the Tall Wood House – is the newest addition to UBC student residence buildings. Future of Food Global Dialogue Series: We Were Healthier When it Used to Rain Date: March 1st Time: 12pm-1:30pm Location: Liu Institute for Global Studies – Multipurpose rm We’ve got amazing speakers at our Future of Food Global Dialogue series. The series include topics such as climate change, food security, biodiversity, social justice, culture, and policy. Implementing the Paris Agreement: Are We On the Right Track? Date: March 7th Time: 12pm-2pm Location: Liu Institute for Global Issues – Multipurpose rm Over 100 countries have ratified the Paris Agreement at record speed, and it came into effect on November 4, 2016. Are we on track to implementing the Paris Agreement? Can individual governments live up to their nationally determined commitments? Even if they do, will that limit global warming to the 2 degrees Celsius tipping point? Mr. Satya Tripathi, Senior Advisor for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with the UN, will review the challenges that countries must confront and opportunities they must capitalize upon to have a realistic shot at implementing the Paris Agreement. Canada’s Carbon Tax: What it means for you, the environment, and the economy Date: March 9th Time: 5pm-6:30pm Location:BC Hydro Theatre, CIRS Want to learn about federal carbon taxes and how they affect the Canadian economy and the environment? Join us for a panel discussion on March 9th! Panelists will have different perspectives on carbon taxes and will be taking questions from the audience. Brought to you by the Sustainability Ambassadors and the Environmental Policy Association, this event is an excellent opportunity to learn more about environmental policy and how carbon taxes influence both our daily lives and the country as a whole. UBC Farm Community Workshop Series Dates: beginning March 9th through May 13th Times: Various Locations: Various The UBC Farm hosts workshops in three seasons, the Spring, Summer and Fall. Workshops are led by our staff, partners in the community or experts from around the region. Each UBC Farm workshop strives to include hands-on activities for participants. Advancing Water Stewardship in Mining – from the Site to the Catchment Date: March 14 Time: 12pm-1pm Location: Liu Institute for Global Issues – Multipurpose rm No RSVP required. Join us for this talk by Nadja Kunz, Assistant Professor at the Liu Institute for Global Issues and Norman B Keevil Mining Engineering at UBC, as part of the Policy@UBC series and CIRDI seminar series. Nadja works at the interface of research and practice to resolve private sector water challenges, with a focus on the mining and resources sector. This presentation provides an overview of Nadja’s evolving research program that focuses on developing new tools and frameworks to improve collaborative decision-making by governments, communities and industry towards more sustainable water allocation and efficient water use. Sustainability Research and Career Symposium

The Symposium showcases a spectrum of graduate and faculty research surrounding sustainability. Join us and help celebrate research developments that have the potential to improve human and environmental wellbeing of our communities. The UBC Sustainability Ambassadors present “Renew YOUR Resolutions.” Join us for a day packed with fun workshops and activities. Food literacy, a cooking demonstration, understanding your economic footprint,  yoga – we have you covered to make sure you’re on track with your New Year’s Resolutions. Some workshops are drop-in and some require registration and all are free to students. Mix and match or come to all of them, it’s up to you.  Check it out today.

UBC Farm 2017 Summer Internships Application deadlines: February and March The LFS Career Development Internship (LFS 496) prepares UBC students professionally and academically for future careers through a mentored learning experience with a real food business or organization. The nine positions range from field and harvest work at the UBC Farm, developing workshop curriculum, working in web communications, training food entrepreneurs, and fostering community with the Tu’Wusht Indigenous Garden. The positions are unpaid, for-credit internships. Explore the list of internships to find out more.

BC Provincial Election – GreenPAC campaign GreenPAC, a non-partisan non-profit that is working to elect environmental leaders in Canadian politics, is reaching out to UBC students to build volunteer teams. Check out our volunteer handbook for more details. UBC Farm Volunteer Orientation Dates Five of the major UBC Farm programs are now beginning volunteer orientations for the 2017 season. Get your hands dirty with the Urban Farmers Program, our Farm Market team, the Indigenous Gardens, our Outreach crew or the FarmWonders children’s programs. Funded PhD Workshop in Berlin: Climate Policies after Paris Application Deadline: February 24th Location: Freie Universität Berlin, Berlin, Germany Through UBC’s participation in the University Alliance for Sustainability, UBC PhD students are invited to apply and present their climate policy research at a Spring Campus workshop (March 28-31) organized in collaboration with the Free University Berlin. The workshop seeks to explore research on climate policies after Paris. Submit a short abstract by February 24

Student Directed Seminars: Application Now Open! Application Deadline: April 7th Do you have an idea for a new UBC class?  Is there a topic you are passionate about and want to study with a group of peers? Are you looking for ways to enrich your education and take control of your learning?  Then consider applying to coordinate a Student Directed Seminar and turn that idea into a UBC course!  Information sessions happening over the next two months and applications are due Friday, April 7th at 11:59pm. Find out more more information and Check out the application guide.

Elizabeth Henry Scholarship for Communities and Environmental Health Application Deadline: May 10th The Elizabeth Henry Scholarship supports graduate students working on BC based research projects that are addressing environmental health issues and promoting environmental sustainability through cooperative community initiatives. It provides an annual award of $2,000 for eligible research projects. The scholarship is funded by the Fraser Basin Council, British Columbia Clean Air Research (BC CLEAR) Fund and by many friends, family members and colleagues who wish to remember Elizabeth and her work.
