Friday, August 8th, 11:30-12:30 in BH 0067: So you want to be the boss: Climbing the ladder

According to a new study by the Center for Talent Innovation, a non-profit research organization in New York, being perceived as leadership material is essential to being promoted into leadership positions. Sheryl Sandberg addresses the issue from a woman’s perspective in ‘Lean in: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead.’ Is your name on the ‘invisible list?’ When colleagues describe you, do they mention your ability to project gravitas? confidence, poise under pressure and decisiveness? Are you gaining the experience you need in your current position to get you to the next level or to that dream job? In this interactive session, we will unwrap ‘executive presence’ in the world of Student Affairs and how it applies across various levels, with introverts and extroverts, and under-represented populations. We will examine the ‘unwritten rules of the game,’ what kind of positional moves are possible, how to showcase your strengths, and how to gain the skills needed for the next level. Participants will be encouraged to examine their career ladders, past & present, as well as creating a strategy for future ascent.
