Students in autumnEnrolment Services has been leading a collaborative planning process for Aboriginal student recruitment in 2015/2016. This is the first time that more than 20 advisors from faculties and units from both campuses have come together to provide ideas that will lead to the development of an overall Aboriginal recruitment plan for undergraduate students.

Who was involved?

  • The ES organizing team: Leanne Isaak, Melody Markle, Celia Reimer, and Kristen Harvey
  • The advisors: Adrienne Vedan and Debra Martel
  • The participants: Representatives from the First Nations House of Learning, Aboriginal Programs and Services, Enrolment Services, Housing, and the Faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Education, Forestry, and School of Kinesiology

How did it work?

The organizing team initiated the process by inviting campus stakeholders to meet, contribute ideas, and support the work. Our advising team helped craft questions get the most out of the discussions. The first meeting was held in February to plan for activities that lead to an application to UBC, and the second meeting was held in April to discuss activities UBC undertakes once a student has applied to UBC.

What’s next?

The draft plan is under development, and we’ll continue to seek the support of the community we helped to develop  through this collaborative planning process. We’ve already had an offer from one faculty to host next year’s planning meeting!
