Hello from North Vancouver

Hi everyone,

I’m excited and slightly nervous to be doing this course and 565M this term, as I’ve had a long break from studying. Right now, I’m a stay-at-home mom to 2 little boys. Prior to that I was a college instructor, a creative for a couple dot com companies, and an e-learning consultant at an educational publishing company in New Zealand, in which I helped develop new literacy and numeracy products for NZ schools and international markets. I have a personal interest in how technology can help kids with special needs.  When not doing MET courses, I run a little Etsy shop with my husband selling our prints and paper products (the antithesis to digital!) and consult for a start up app development company. I’m very happy to be on this adventure with you all!

This image captures the essence of what my life is like.

My new position is Special Education Coordinator at Klappan Independent School in Iskut, B.C. Your expertise in literacy and numeracy products sounds intriguing. My responsibilities will include structuring and managing support programs for autistic and F.A.S.D. students.

It was a toss-up between 565M and this course when I was choosing for this term. You’ll have to tell me what it’s like. Maybe I’ll stick around for an 11th course if it’s super interesting? Are we allowed to do that?

My wife and I ran a little Etsy shop while she was off on maternity leave with our two boys, and continued with it for a few more years after that. It was a fantastic experience while we pursued it, and we had a great time with it.

I’ve never taken two courses at once, and just plodded along one course at a time. Have you taken all the core courses already?

I am also doing the same courses with you this term! They look like a lot of work, but very rewarding! It will be fun to collaborate across courses as well! Best of luck this term!

It looks like there will be many familiar faces, I will be in both courses too! I am really looking forward to them both! John this is my second term doing two at once, and it takes some dedication, but is manageable.

Hi John, I’ll let you know how 565 goes. The Etsy work is good, but it is a time sucker! Especially now that we’ve expanded into actual brick and mortar stores. I’ve never taken 2 courses at once and I’m VERY nervous, especially since I still have a 3 yr with me all the time. But it’s good to hear from Rose that it is manageable with discipline. Cheers, Jen

Hi David, your new role sounds fascinating. I’ll be interested to hear how it goes. Just to be clear, I (sadly) have no expertise in numeracy and literacy, instead I worked with literacy experts to explore new digital products, e.g. a digital shared reading book with in text teacher supports.

  7. Hi there Jen!
It sounds like you have a nice little balance between the old and new world. I’m curious about your experiences telecommuting for company in NZ from North Van. I’m curious…how did you find that position?

    Also, link to your Etsy?

    Hi Jen,
Looks like you have your hands full. Love the Etsy shop online. How is that working out? Do you find you do a lot of online business? Would be interested in how you would advertise?

    Cheers,
    Kevin
