iLrn: the online exercises and extra practice UPDATED: 2013-11-04

QUICK LINKS:

The online exercises for Horizons are at an external website (not on UBC Connect): at the iLrn Heinle Learning Centre.
Two URLS: http://hlc.quia.com/books and http://www.cengagesites.com/academic/?site=5212
(NB: You’ll see the following words used, for the sites, publisher’s materials, help resources, etc.: iLrn, Quia, Cengage, Heinle, and Nelson. Apologies on behalf of the publishers for any confusion.)

These exercises are worth 10% of your final grade.

  • Some may be set for specific dates, can only be attempted once, and are timed; these might include vocabulary quizzes
  • Nearly all are set for specific dates, but can be repeated several times within that period: these accompany and reinforce the work we’re doing in class the week before that deadline.
The dates are to help you to plan and organize your work: these exercises can be redone for revision at any time before the final exam (14 December).
  • Some can be completed at any point during the term: these are not graded, though you will receive credit for having done them;  you may find them helpful practice for test and examination revision.
  • Your online exercise mark will only be calculated at the very end of term (December): this is so that you can use the exercises for revision before the final exam.

NOTE ON THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF TERM: Because this is before the end of the period in which students can add and drop courses without incurring a “W” on their transcript, exercises set in this period (on the preliminary chapter, and on chapter 1 up to and including compétence 2) do not count towards your final grade. They are just for practice.

For students in FREN 101_901, your supplementary alternative exercises may also be on iLrn; consult your instructor for further details.

WHAT TO DO – HOW TO REGISTER AT iLrn?

GUIDE: READ THIS FIRST AND KEEP IT OPEN WHILE REGISTERING AT ILRN:

THE VERBAL VERSION

1. Please go to http://hlc.quia.com/books

2. Using your 16- to 19-character “book key” online code (provided with your textbook, if you bought it at the UBC Bookstore), set up your account with a username and password. See Course materials: introduction to iLrn for detailed information, step-by-step instructions, and caveats.

3. Once you enter your book key, you will have the option to enter a course code that will register you for your class and allow you to submit your assignments to your instructor.
Our course = FREN 101
Our course code = DGDCTM366

4. Next, add yourself to the appropriate “class”: this is the section you’re in. For example, FREN 101-101 is “Section 101.”

5. You will see your “workstation,” where you will be able to access the online exercises that have been set for you.

6. To work on your online exercises throughout the term, and to consult your e-textbook, annotate it, etc.: go to http://hlc.quia.com/books

PLEASE NOTE: in accordance with BC privacy law (FIPPA):

  • in the “required information” sections (= items with *) you DO NOT have to disclose and use your full name, or indeed your real name and email address. Refer to Course materials: introduction to iLrn for further details on what to do here.
  • in the other (= no *) sections, you DO NOT have to fill out your full (real, true) address and telephone number
  • But: in the drop-down menus for “country,” “province,” and “time zone” please select “Canada,” “BC,” and any of the time-zones that are Pacific Coast/GMT-8. That last item helps, to ensure we’re all in the same time-zone: otherwise you might find that you’ve missed a deadline for an online exercise!
An example follows below, of how the FREN 101 coordinator filled out her profile (her password, by the way, is not “change”…):
