Warkentin Prize – Application/Nomination Deadline Extension to May 31st, 2019

The Warkentin Prize of $500 will be awarded to a graduate student, or someone who has graduated from a graduate program within the last two years, that has published a graduate thesis or peer-reviewed article in the field of soil science.

You can apply by emailing the following to prsssemail@gmail.com:

• Name, institution attended, and most recent degree
• a copy or link to the publication (peer-reviewed article or thesis accepted)
• a statement explaining how the article has contributed to the field of soil science
• a brief statement outlining the significance of the research to the public
• a maximum of two letters of support

You can also nominate a student by sending us a link or copy of their publication, along with a statement supporting your nomination.

The Warkentin Prize recipient will be acknowledged in our newsletter and on our website. The recipient will also be invited to give a presentation of their research at the next PRSSS Spring Workshop and Annual General Meeting.

The Graduate Student Society (GSS) is currently collecting responses for the 2019 Graduate Student Satisfaction Survey.

We have run the survey since 2014 to measure the quality of graduate student experience at UBC Vancouver.

The answers and opinions collected help the GSS identify the most pressing challenges faced by graduate students, and then advocate for improvements in areas such as graduate student funding, housing, and career preparation.

In addition, the survey provides a useful snapshot of the changing concerns and experiences of graduate students over time. It is important that we try and reach as many students as possible across campus so we are reaching out to course administrators to try and encourage more students to complete the survey.

I would be most grateful if you could send the message to your student cohort and encourage them to complete the survey as more responses means more robust data.

The survey is open until May 31, 2019. It only takes less than 20 minutes to finish.

Waitlist registration for the Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) May 25, 26 & June 1, 2019 is now OPEN.  The ISW is a 3-day intensive workshop that develops participant’s teaching skills and confidence.  It is appropriate for first time teachers or those with years of experience.  Join the thousands of students who have taken this workshop. The ISW is an internationally recognized program and students receive transcript notation for their participation. In addition,
upon successful completion of the workshop, graduate students are eligible to become CIRTL associates.

IMPORTANT: The workshop runs from 8:15am-5:00pm. Please note you must attend all three days for the complete duration of the workshop, i.e. the entire 24-hour workshop.
