UBC Farm Workshops – Registration Open

The Centre for Sustainable Food Systems has opened registration for the first half of our 2019 workshop series!

The UBC Farm hosts a wide range of workshops covering everything from gardening to herbal medicine, making fiber, fermenting, foraging, and much more. This year, we have added several new workshops and brought back many favourites. All of our workshops are beginner friendly and open to everyone, so please share with your networks (attached are a poster and flyer)!

Competition Announcement: WorksafeBC Research Training Awards

WorksafeBC Research Training Awards

WorksafeBC Research Training Awards are designed to foster the development of occupational health and safety research among graduate students at the master’s and doctoral levels. These awards enable students to undertake full-time research training in B.C. — focusing on occupational illness, injury, and disability.  Research projects must address WorkSafeBC’s current research priorities to be eligible for consideration.

Value: $20,000 stipend and a $2,500 research and travel allowance

Duration: Master’s students receive one year of funding and doctoral students receive two years of funding. Recipients can apply to renew their grant for an additional year.

Application Deadline: March 22, 2019

Competition Announcements: CAGS Distinguished Dissertation Award and Governor General’s Gold Medal

CAGS / ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Awards – INTERNAL DEADLINE – February 13, 2019

The CAGS/ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Awards recognize exceptional doctoral dissertations that make significant, original contributions to both the academic community and to Canadian society. There are two awards: one for engineering, medical sciences and natural sciences; and one for fine arts, humanities and social sciences.  Awards are offered through this spring’s competition for dissertations completed and accepted by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies between 1 January 2018 and 31 December 2018. The awards include a $1,500 prize, a Citation Certificate and travel expenses of up to $1,500 to attend the 2019 CAGS Annual Conference.

Each UBC graduate program may nominate one dissertation to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies by 4:00pm on Friday, 22 February 2019.

Governor General’s Gold Medal – INTERNAL DEADLINE February 22, 2019

One gold medal is awarded to the student who has achieved the most outstanding academic record as a doctoral student. A second gold medal is awarded to the graduate student who has achieved most outstanding academic record as a Master’s student completing a thesis.  Students must have submitted the final copy of their thesis to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2018.  This is an opportunity to honour the best in the graduating class within the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, as there is only one award for more than 2,000 Master’s graduates and one award for more than 500 doctoral graduates. Medals are presented on behalf of the Governor General of Canada by participating educational institutions, along with a personalized certificate signed by the Governor General. There is no monetary award associated with the medals.

Please be aware of the deadline for the Governor General’s Gold Medal competition, which is open to nominations from all graduate programs at UBC via their Faculty Dean’s Office. Graduate programs must check with their respective Dean’s Office for their Faculty’s internal nomination deadline. Internal nomination deadlines are normally several weeks before the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies deadline.  The deadline for disciplinary Faculties to submit their nominations to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies is 4:00 p.m. on Friday, 8 March 2019.

About the Speaker: 

Michelle Corfield is an independent consultant specializing in process design, facilitation, research, and personal, community, and organizational development. Until recently, she held the position of Vice-President for the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council. Over the years she has served as a board member for various organizations and societies. Currently she is a board member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. She is one of the founding partners and designers of the BC Multi-Sectoral Leadership Initiative (weavingrelationships.org).
