Reminder: Spring Graduate Awards Competition

Standard

Internal Deadline: Monday, May 13th 2024.
Please notify me about your attention of applying (as I need to prepare transcripts) by May 8, 2024.

Spring Graduate Awards Competition

A number of university awards for the upcoming academic year are available to current and incoming graduate students.  The maximum value of funding that can be offered to a student is $16,000, or up to $22,000 for the #491 Rick Hansen “Man in Motion” Fellowship, or $25,000 for the #6495 Andrew Nord Fellowships in Rheumatology and the #6887 Clifford Alexander Robson and Else Loella Robson Memorial Scholarship respectively. Applicants will apply via their graduate programs with a single application that may be considered for as many of the Spring Graduate Awards as they are eligible for, taking note of the following important considerations:

  • Eligibility: To be eligible to receive funding, applicants must meet both the overall eligibility requirements as outlined on the award webpage (ex. months of study) and all of the eligibility requirements for each individual Spring Graduate Award they apply for. Applicants will not be considered for an award if they do not clearly meet the criteria for the award.
  • Students must be registered, full-time graduate students during the period of the award (September 2024 to August 2025). Incoming students (ie. will start in September 2024 or January 2025) are also eligible to apply (ex. a successful Spring Awards applicant starting in January 2025 could receive funding covering January to August 2025).

  • Selection:   While award recipients will be selected based on the evaluation criteria, priority will be given to eligible candidates who do not hold significant scholarship funding (i.e., $16,000 or higher) for the 2024/2025 academic year (September 2024 to August 2025).  If a student is offered Spring Awards funding, and later receives other scholarship funding of $16,000 or higher for the same period, the Spring Awards funding offer would normally be rescinded.
    • Exception: Some of the Spring Graduate Awards have very niche award descriptions (eligibility requirements).  For example, the #6362 award ‘James and Setsuko Thurlow Scholarship in Peace and Disarmament Studies’.  If a Spring Graduate Award receives a very low number of eligible applications, it may be awarded to a student who already has significant scholarship funding.

A complete application consists of:

Important: Please refer to the application instructions for essential details on each application item noted above.

Application deadline: Monday, May 13th 2024.

Deadline for graduate program nominations to G+PS: 4:00 pm PT on May 27, 2024

Courses on Transformative Agroecology and Participatory Action Research

Standard

Hi everyone,

I hope this message finds you well. We are recruiting students for two courses (see attached and below) that we are offering this fall as a part of our Certificate of Graduate Study in Agroecology (CGSA). In previous years, graduate students from around the country and internationally have enrolled because they lacked access to similar courses in their home institutions – this might be the case for some of your own students or peers. These courses are also open to professional and community-based learners. Please pass this message along to anyone you think might be interested.

Best,

Colin

ALE 6110: Transformative Agroecology

SHIFTING PRACTICES AND PARADIGMS FOR FOOD SYSTEM TRANSFORMATION

Agroecology is multifaceted – connecting political, socio-cultural, productive, and environmental threads together in an integrated approach to food and farming systems. This introductory course covers the evolution of agroecology from its origins to the present, including the myriad ways it is both understood and practiced. Course participants will explore conceptual and practical content from around the globe, and collectively engage in critical inquiry, reflect on their own place and power within agri-food systems, and assess agroecology’s potential for moving us closer to full transformation of our current food systems.

ALE 6130: Participatory Action Research & Transdisciplinary Agroecology

PUTTING RESEARCH TO WORK FOR FOOD SYSTEM TRANSFORMATION

Participatory, transdisciplinary and action research have become widely recognized as vital approaches for agroecology and food sovereignty. These approaches require a careful and intentional cultivation of a researcher’s commitments, skill and competencies. Students will learn how participatory action research can deepen our collective understanding of complex issues and support social transformations for social justice and sustainability. We will use participatory learning methods to form a learning community to engage in theory, build skills, learn new methods and cultivate a critical self-awareness as a researcher.
