Reminder: August and/or November graduation

Standard

Reminder: August and/or November graduation

As a reminder, as a one-time response to Workday Student implementation, November 2024 graduation provides students with two opportunities to have their degrees granted (conferred) by Senate – one in August and the other in November.

Note that G+PS is not able to provide exceptions for late applications or approvals to the August deadlines.

There are two pathways to take for November graduation ceremonies; one pathway where degrees are granted in August and the second where degrees are granted in November.

Please apply for Graduation on SSC by July 31, 2024 even if unsure about making the July 31 deadline, but will be complete in time for November graduation.

If you have applied for the August conferral but do not meet the deadline, you do not need to re-apply. The application will be “rolled over” and they will be assessed in the final November application period.

Students who expect to complete their program for the November conferral should also apply in SSC by Jul 31, 2024 to simplify the process. Their application will be moved to the final November application period.

August graduation: mostly applies to the research students: MSc and PhD.

July 31 – 4pm – the deadline for thesis/dissertation acceptance to have the degree granted in August.

November graduation:

  • Apply for graduation on SSC by July 31, 2024 – Ideal
  • Post-July 31 – apply through GPS Form Centre – Aug 1 to Oct 18.

Oct 18 at 4pm – Deadline for thesis/dissertation acceptance to have the degree granted in November

Oct 18 – Last accepted date for course-based programs to have the degree granted in November (the effective date when the student completed all requirements)

Seeking LFS graduate student to serve on a Search Committee

Standard

The Faculties of Forestry and Land & Food Systems are putting together a Search committee for an ethnically Black candidate for a jointly-appointed tenure-track Assistant Professor with an interest in Policy, in a broad sense. This will be the second hire of the three-person Black Faculty Cluster in Food, Forests, and (Bio)Fuels.

The committee consists of:

Janette Bulkan (Forestry) – Co-Chair

Carol McAusland (LFS) – Co-Chair

Matias Margulis (LFS)

Mahsa Jessri (LFS)

Terry Sunderland (Forestry)

Scott Renneckar (Forestry)

The Search Committee needs two graduate students to complete the Committee numbers – one each from Forestry and Land & Food Systems. These are volunteer positions.

Students who are supervised by one of the committee members listed above are not eligible.

This Faculty position will be joint between the Faculties of Forestry and Land and Food Systems as part of a cluster hire of three ethnically Black faculty in the areas of Food, Forests and Bio(Fuels). More information on the cluster can be found here: https://forestry.ubc.ca/news/black-faculty-cohort-in-food-forests-and-biofuels/.  The recruitment of ethnically Black faculty is taking place across UBC, fulfilling a high-level policy decision.

If you are a graduate student and would like to be a member of this Search Committee, as soon as possible please email Carol McAusland (LFS) carol.mcausland@ubc.ca or Janette Bulkan (Forestry) janette.bulkan@ubc.ca.

Search Committee will serve between August and December 2024.

Graduate Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) August 26, 28 & 30, 2024 Application Opens July 12!

Standard

The Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT) will be offering a Graduate Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) on August 26, 28 & 30, 2024.

The Grad ISW is a 24-hour, fully participatory, and peer-based professional development workshop for graduate students that is beneficial to both new and experienced instructors.

Please note: You must attend all sessions and complete all independent work for the complete duration of the workshop, (i.e. the entire 24-hour workshop).

To apply for the waitlist for August 26, 28 & 30, 2024 ISW click here: https://events.ctlt.ubc.ca/events/graduate-instructional-skills-workshop-august-26-28-30-2024-preliminary-application/

Application opens on July 12 at 9 am and closes on August 21 at 4:30 pm. By clicking this link, you are applying for the WAITLIST only and this DOES NOT register you for the workshop. Graduate ISWs at UBC are in high demand. To create an equitable registration process all graduate students who apply for an ISW will first be enrolled on a waitlist, from which participants are randomly selected. If a participant has applied for more than one ISW waitlist, their name will appear more frequently when generating the participant list, giving them a higher chance of being selected for an ISW. If you are accepted into the workshop, you will be contacted by our office to confirm your registration. For more information and a list of all upcoming sessions visit: http://ctlt.ubc.ca/gradisw

Workshop Eligibility:

Please read the application process and workshop eligibility prior to applying.

A participant who wishes to take the Grad ISW is eligible if they are:

  • a full-time or part-time registered graduate student at UBC during the academic term when the ISW is offered
  • a graduate student at UBC who has completed degree requirements but has not yet convocated
  • a joint degree graduate student who is enrolled at UBC and another institution
  • a graduate student at UBC pursuing non-degree studies
  • a visiting graduate student that is eligible to take courses

A participant who wishes to take the Grad ISW is not eligible if they are:

  • not a graduate student at UBC
  • a graduate student at UBC who has on-leave status
  • a visiting graduate student that is not eligible to take courses
