MEMORANDUM

October 7, 2024

TO: All in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems – faculty, staff, students, and postdoctoral fellows (distributed via the Dean’s office)

FROM: Gage Averill, Provost and Vice-President Academic, UBC Vancouver

RE: Leadership of the Faculty of Land and Food Systems

Last year we undertook a President’s Search for a new Dean of Land and Food Systems. As you know, the search did not yield a successful hire, and we were fortunate to have Dr. David Kitts agree to serve as Dean pro tem until a new Dean is hired.

We have held conversations with the executive search firm that conducted the last search, and we have been told that the small pool of senior candidates for such a job (especially in Canada) means that we have largely exhausted the possible candidates who are currently willing to consider another position. It appears that another search right away would be unlikely to yield a sufficient pool of candidates to justify the process.

As a result, it will be necessary to pause the Land and Food Systems Dean search process until late spring of this year, after which we will initiate a new search.

Once again, I thank the previous search committee for their dedicated work, and I look forward to working with the Faculty in the future to successfully conclude a search.

Memo from the Provost to be distributed to all members of the Faculty of Land & Food Systems – faculty, staff, students and postdocs?  It’s an update on the Dean search.

Thank you,

Kate
