FISH 507: Grand Challenges in Ocean Leadership
We are excited to offer FISH 507: Grand Challenges in Ocean Leadership for the 2018/19 academic year. Please find a description attached and feel free to email any questions to ocean.leaders@ubc.ca
Grand Challenges in Ocean Leadership helps students gain the skills and knowledge necessary to translate research into policy and management innovations. Students are mentored on a variety of professional development skills by faculty in UBC’s Ocean Leaders program and off-campus collaborators.
Class exercises include scenario planning, science communication and knowledge translation, collective leadership, and strategies for working with stakeholders including governments, NGOs and the broader community
As part of the course, students work in interdisciplinary groups on local marine and coastal challenges with community partners. Recent projects included:
· Making False Creek swimmable
· UBC plastic use and its ocean impacts
· Managing shoreline waste
Wednesdays 2–4 pm
Terms 1 and 2
Meets eight times a semester
