Summary
Kanaka Bar Indian Band is a progressive First Nations community located 15 km south of Lytton in the Fraser Canyon. Our community recognizes the impacts of climate change and we have recently completed a climate change vulnerability assessment and adaptation strategy. As part of our adaptation strategy we are working towards self-sufficiency in four main areas, food, energy, employment and finance. With respect to energy self-sufficiency our community has implemented a number of clean energy initiatives, including several solar power projects and a joint partnership with Innergex Inc. for a hydroelectric project. We are also investigating new wind, hydro and solar power projects to support an up and coming housing development. We are also implementing demand side management practices through a made in Kanaka program called “KanPower” and real-time energy monitors in community buildings to secure detailed power usage.

We are keen to hire a student intern to help gather, store and transfer knowledge related to our community energy and adaptation practices. In general, this will include:
• Analyzing, summarizing and communicating data and information related to Kanaka’s energy self-sufficiency projects.
• Analyzing, summarizing and communicating data and information related to Kanaka’s environmental monitoring programs.
• Supporting community energy efficiency initiatives.
• Updating the community website with communication materials

The intent is to complete the desired analysis and prepare communication materials to help build capacity among the membership to further advance Kanaka’s (energy) self-sufficiency goals and environmental monitoring initiatives.

Start/End Date
This position is for a duration of 13 weeks starting May 6th, 2019 and ending on August 2nd, 2019 with an option to extend the term for an additional 3 weeks.

Reporting Structure
The Community Energy/Climate Technologist will report to Chief Patrick on a daily basis with engagement, guidance and mentoring from Urban Systems Ltd. and Riverside Energy Systems.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
• Assess the viability of renewable energy project opportunities including: solar, wind, hydropower, and biomass.
• Analysis of power generation data from existing energy projects and cost-benefit evaluation.
• Communication materials and presentation related to Kanaka’s energy self-sufficiency projects.
• Evaluating energy supply and efficiency options at Kanaka’s affordable housing project (in design phase).
• Support the implementation of KanPower and other energy efficiency initiatives.
• Communication materials and presentation to community on energy use analysis and recommendations.
• Prepare community energy and emissions baselines (data collection and analysis).
• Download, analysis and summary of weather data from Kanaka Bar’s weather stations and hydrometric gauging stations.
• All data, reports and communication materials to be added to Kanaka Bar’s public website.
Requirements
• Must be enrolled in a fulltime undergraduate or graduate program and returning to university following their internship. Students who have completed their degree program are not eligible.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Applicant must have the skills to generate works on their own using Microsoft Office package.
• Interest in climate change adaption and clean energy initiatives.
• Basic understanding of energy production and usage.
Working Conditions
• Physical presence at the Band Office from Monday to Friday during regular office hours and during Council, Board and Community meetings.
• Field work in hot and cold conditions.
• Interaction with employees, membership and the public.
• Travel as and when required.
• Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
• Sitting for extended periods of time.
• Able to attend community meetings and conduct presentations using various media.

This will be a full-time contract employment position for a minimum of 13 weeks based out of Kanaka Bar’s Band Office. Compensation will consider both the qualification and experience of the applicant. Accommodation in our new subdivision will be provided with rent and hydro covered by Kanaka Bar. The successful applicant will be responsible for internet service, cell phone service, food and other basic living expenses, as needed.
