Doctoral Deadline Reminder – August 31, Program Completion

Standard

Friendly reminders – Deadlines

Happy April!

The deadline for submission of Nominations for External Examiner for PhD candidates wanting to complete on the timeline for August 31, 2022 Program Completion is next week, Friday, April 8. This is a flexible deadline, and there is still time for students to submit those forms. They should come in by mid-April to reduce the likelihood of a delay in the invitation process.

As a reminder, the other dates candidates need to meet are as follows:

FRIDAY, 10 JUNE 2022 – Doctoral dissertation (and supporting documentation) submitted to Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for external examination

FRIDAY 5 AUGUST – Last Day for Final Doctoral Oral Examination

FRIDAY, 26 AUGUST – Acceptance of final, approved doctoral dissertation by Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies

Students will be able to choose to defend either in person or on Zoom. We will work with students to select the most appropriate mode for their defence. (Please note that the exam rooms in Thea Koerner House may not be available in July and August due to planned work on the roof.)

There is an information session for students about the Doctoral Exam process organized by Graduate Pathways to Success on April 5 at 2pm. Students who are interested in attending this Zoom session can register here: https://www.grad.ubc.ca/about-us/events/21787-doctoral-defence-doctoral-examination-defence-procedures

The PRSSS is hosting their soil ID course in May.

The Pacific Regional Society of Soil Science is hosting their annual Soil Identification Workshop

Date: May 3-5

Time: 9-5

Location: South Vancouver Island

Cost:

$100 for Students

$200 for Professionals

Course Description:

Every summer the PRSSS hosts a soil identification course that is suitable for both the soil professional and soil-curious alike. Each year the course is held in a different region of BC where course participants can benefit from the wealth of knowledge shared by local soil experts as they explore the diverse array of soil types throughout the province.

The course runs for three days, beginning with an introduction to soil classification and field descriptions, as well as proper hand-texturing methods and jar testing. The remaining time is spent in the field where participants gain hands-on experience digging soil pits, interpreting what they discover, and integrating what they observe from the surrounding environment as soil formation factors and soil processes are revealed.

From students to professional foresters and surficial geologists, the varied backgrounds of participants create a unique group dynamic that fosters great conversations, debates, and a lot of fun!

Please note that completing the registration form does not guarantee you a spot. Space is limited to 25 participants. If more than 25 are interested, priority will be given to residents that live in the area and the First Nations community

To attend the course, you must be a 2022/2023 PRSSS member (membership fees are $10 for students and $20 for professionals
