MLWS Seminar – Deglaciation of Western Canada in the 21st Century (Feb. 1st)

Standard

TOPIC: Deglaciation of Western Canada in the 21st century

SPEAKER: Garry K. C. Clarke

DATE & TIME: Friday, February 1, 2019 from 2:00-3:00pm

PLACE: MCML 154

ABSTRACT: Like most of Earth’s mountain glaciers, those in western North America are experiencing rapid mass loss. Projections using a high-resolution regional glaciation model indicate that by 2100 the volume of glacier ice in western Canada will shrink by 70±10% relative to 2005, leaving few glaciers remaining in the BC Interior and Rocky Mountains.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Garry Clarke is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, at the University of British Columbia, in the field of glaciology. His research focuses on the physics of glaciers and ice sheets, both modern day and ancient (i.e. during the last Ice Age).  This involves both long-term field monitoring of glacier flow and oscillations and informing computational models that simulate the dynamics of ancient and modern ice sheets. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the American Geophysical Union, and an honorary member of the International Glaciological Society.

All are welcome!
