MSFHR Research Trainee Program

The Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSFHR) Research Trainee Program is designed to attract, recognize, and support outstanding researchers who have completed a PhD, or are a health professional eligible for a fellowship (or equivalent) program, by providing funding that helps protect time for health research activities.

This program may be of interest to PhD students in the health sciences that are nearing the end of their programs (i.e., those who have a PhD by September 1, 2019). This program is open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents or foreign nationals, and primarily (70% of total funding) supports MSFHR’s four research pillars: biomedical, clinical, health services, and population health. The remaining 30% of funding will be allocated to outstanding researchers conducting research in the five BC health system key priority areas.

Info Session at UBC this Thursday (Dec 13): This session will include a presentation and a question-and-answer session, as well as the opportunity to connect with members of the MSFHR team.

Award Amount and Duration: The award consists of a stipend and a research and travel allowance and provides support for up to a maximum of three years. The amount and duration of the MSFHR Research Trainee award is determined by the amount of time since an applicant has completed their PhD, or health professional degree, as of the full application deadline.

·        Letter of intent deadline: January 11, 2019, 4:30 p.m. PT

·        Full application deadline: February 19, 2019, 4:30 p.m. PT

Can you please remind all Graduate Students that are hoping to have their degree granted in February, with the option to attend the May congregation ceremony, that the application for graduation will be available on the Student Service Centre starting Friday Dec 14, 2018 and will be close on  January 18, 2019.

Please advise students that are hoping to graduate in February 2019, that it is very important that they apply for graduation as soon as possible, and should not wait until they submit their final thesis to G+PS or complete the program requirements for non-thesis programs.

Friedman Award for Scholars in Health

The Friedman Award for Scholars in Health is open to any UBC graduate student or medical resident studying in the area of health. ‘Health’ is interpreted very broadly, and includes health promotion and disease prevention, mental health research, laboratory sciences related to medicine or health, public health, health services research, or any area intended to impact human health.

The Friedman Award for Scholars in Health supports learning and research opportunities for graduate students or medical residents working in the broad area of health, to bring new perspectives to their education and further their career.

Award Value: Awards of up to $50,000 each will be granted for six or more months of study. Award amount will be at the discretion of the adjudication committee. Each recipient of a Friedman Award will be designated a “Friedman Scholar”.

Benjamin Lecorps, a PhD student in the animal welfare program, participated in a Q&A with UBC Media Relations as the lead author of a new study: Dairy calves’ personality traits predict social proximity and response to an emotional challenge.

The study is a follow-up to one published earlier this year that found that dairy calves have distinct personality traits from a very young age.
