Pre-announcement: CCS Research Training Awards

The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) and its partners have identified the next generation of cancer researchers as a critical component to sustain research progress and drive innovation. To support this, CCS will be launching Research Training Awards for Master’s, Doctoral, and Postdoctoral fellows. These awards will seek to build capacity in the cancer research ecosystem by funding competitive, scientifically excellent applications, and by supporting the development of a diverse, inclusive and representative research workforce.

Anticipated launch date:

• March 2023 for Master’s and Doctoral
• May 2023 for Postdoctoral

Objective:

The Research Training Awards will support cancer research training and foster innovation in cancer research through an equity-seeking lens by supporting diverse trainees in an inclusive research environment. Research Training Awards will apply a holistic approach to research training that includes mentorship, training, and knowledge-sharing.

Who Can Apply:

This iteration of the award focuses on Master’s, Doctoral and Postdoctoral fellows. To increase diverse representation in our cancer research ecosystem, CCS and its partners support and encourage Black and Indigenous trainees to apply. For all levels of training, applicants must be Canadian citizens, First Nations (status and non-status), Métis, Inuit or permanent residents.

Funds available:

At least $3M will be awarded in the research training funding envelope. The total funding envelope is likely to increase as additional funds become available from CCS and through partnerships. Individual training amounts are described below (maximums described – awards may be pro-rated for part-time students and those holding other eligible research awards):

March 10 – Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award – Call for nominations

In recognition of the valuable role that Teaching Assistants play in our programs, UBC annually awards 19 Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Awards. Each UBC Killam GTA Award includes a certificate and $1,000. The calls for nominations for the Killam GTA Award for the Faculty of Land and Food Systems are open and can be submitted by any student, faculty or staff who have worked closely with the TA they are nominating.

Eligibility: The award is open to any UBC Graduate Teaching Assistant who acts or has acted in this position at UBC Vancouver during the current and/or preceding academic year (2022-23 and/or 2021-22).

Nomination Process:

To honor the anonymity of students supporting their TAs and to streamline the adjudication process, the Learning Centre has developed a two-step nomination process: (1) nomination with a deadline on February 25, 2023, and (2) documents submissions with a deadline at 3 pm on Macch 10, 2023.

For TAs Self-Nominating Themselves:

1. Submit a self-nomination using the Qualtrics form
2. Create your nomination package as a 4-page document (see details) that includes
   1. Your philosophy statement.
   2. Your teaching responsibilities
3. Submit your nomination package using the Qualtrics form
4. Request support letters from students and instructors.
   1. Download and fill out a standard support letter form
   2. Submit it via the Qualtrics form

For Students, Instructors and Graduate Students/TAs nominating another TA:

   1. The nominee will be notified and reminded to prepare a nomination package
2. Download and fill out a standard support letter form

The Environment and Natural Resources Program and the Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program at Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs are pleased to offer predoctoral, postdoctoral, and professional fellowship opportunities in the area of agriculture and energy policy. Agriculture and Energy Policy Fellowship

Will greater dependence on biofuels and biomass impact food production? Some experts argue that population growth will increase the competition between food crops and energy crops, and climate change impacts including rainfall patterns and higher temperatures may reduce food supplies even further. Other experts argue that increased biofuel production will not appreciably impact food supplies, as improved agricultural practices can increase yields, while feedstocks for biofuels become more varied and can be grown on land that has been less productive. Fellows will explore topics related to the tension between food and fuel. We are interested in a broad menu of topics ranging from future uses of biomass for energy in sectors such as shipping, heavy trucks, and aviation to agricultural practices that enhance the capacity of soils to absorb and retain carbon.

This fellowship is open to doctoral candidates, recent Ph.D. recipients, faculty members, and mid-career professionals from the public and private sectors. The Center is committed to recruiting a highly diverse group of fellows and ensuring that our appointments and selection procedures consciously identify and evaluate people from underrepresented groups.
