New LFS Graduate Student Orientation – September 16 at 7:00 PM PDT

Standard

The following email was bcc’d to email on file for all LFS students starting their graduate program in September 2021 – research-based, professional and graduate certificate programs.

Good evening:

The G&PS Office will be presenting a new LFS graduate student orientation on Thursday, September 16 at 7:00 PM PDT (virtual via zoom).  This is an opportunity for new LFS graduate students to meet each other, the LFS G&PS Team, hear a welcome message from the Dean, an introduction to the LFS Graduate Student Society and have a chance to meet grad advisors and program directors.  The orientation will take approximately an hour and is virtual, via zoom (details below).  RSVP’ing is not necessary as registration is required for this meeting.

Register in advance for this meeting:

https://ubc.zoom.us/meeting/register/u5Yofu2gqDIuH9fGddFYJk33tyRDKSAJQcET

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

Please note, depending on the number and availability of participants, we are hoping to end the orientation by breaking out into program-specific rooms with graduate advisors and directors.  We have asked grad advisors to reach out to students individually if they are not able to attend orientation.  It’s a good opportunity for new students to meet their grad advisor and get a better understanding of their roles and responsibilities.

In addition, last year we started an LFS Graduate Student Peer-To-Peer Program.  This informal program involves senior graduate students reaching out to all new research-based students.  You should receive a welcome/intro email shortly.  Please contact our office by the end of September if you haven’t.

I’ve attached the most recent version of the LFS Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies Office directory that includes all program graduate advisors.

In addition, it’s the start of a new academic year; of COURSE there are going to be announcements!!!

This website also includes a link to the “Graduate Student Community”.  This is a helpful form that answers just about every question a new or returning student might have.

One last thing – our LFS G&PS Office is returning to campus.   We are committed to providing a level of service that is equal to or better than what we offered during Covid.  Iris and I will be transitioning to campus over the next couple of months, Lia will follow a few weeks behind.  Starting next week, between Iris and me, there will be at least one of us on campus daily.  Iris is located in room 291;  I’m right beside in 293.  Our offices will be kept closed, but signage will indicate if we are in or when we are expected back.  Please knock before entering.
