Hello agriculture and climate researchers,

I hope this finds you well after a restful and fun winter break!

I am reaching out to you as the BC Agricultural Climate Action Research Network plans a graduate research series this February, in which we’d like to offer a platform for students to share their findings with the BC agriculture community. We are looking to attract students working on projects that are directly related to agricultural climate mitigation and/or adaptation.

I anticipate the series will span the month of February, with one virtual event per week (i.e.

11-12pm on Feb. 7, 14, 21, 28). Each event would include two graduate student presentations of 15-20 mins each, with time for questions.

While extension is a key part of BC ACARN’s mandate, we do not have expectations that the graduate student presentations be formal extension resources. Rather, we hope the series can provide an opportunity for early career researchers to gain experience presenting to a diverse audience that includes producers, industry, and academia, and gain network connections. We hope this can be a showcase of the current questions, issues, and findings BC agricultural researchers are working on.

If you have graduate students who you think may be interested in this presentation opportunity, please share this email or put them in contact with engagement@bcacarn.com. For this series we can host a maximum of 8 students. We’d ideally love to have student representation from a mix of BC research institutions, to reflect the diversity of bioregions, agricultural commodities, and unique research foci across the province.

In April 2022, the Anti-Racism and Inclusive Excellence Task Force (ARIE TF) released 54 recommendations aimed at addressing the many forms of systemic racism at UBC.

Now, as we enter 2023, please join the Equity & Inclusion Office in a UBC-wide forum to learn next steps for implementing those recommendations. Your participation in this forum is invaluable to not only raise widespread awareness of equity and anti-racism plans but also to take the opportunity to reflect on how each of us can contribute to building an equitable and anti-racist community over the next 3 – 5 years.

My name is Krista Grant, and I am a Program Manager for the Biodiversity Conservation Programs at the Quebec-Labrador Foundation (QLF). QLF is a registered charity based in Montreal, QC working in biodiversity conservation and youth leadership in Canada’s Eastern provinces.

For the spring/summer of 2023, QLF is seeking university students to support the activities of two field programs in the Maritimes provinces, and in Newfoundland and Labrador. We are seeking students with strong interest and experience in one or more of the following areas: ornithology, conservation biology, wildlife conservation, environmental studies, education, or geography.

Salmon-Safe BC would like to invite students and staff from LFS to our upcoming webinar Resilient Agriculture: Salmon-Safe Farms, being held on January 26, 2023, from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm via Zoom. Please see a graphic attached which has information for participants to register for this webinar. We are having speakers from Persephone Brewing Company, Glorious Organics, and Cedar Isle Farms join us to share some of their wisdom!

 

The webinar offers a chance to hear from Salmon-Safe certified producers on how the program has helped their farms become more sustainable, protect salmon, promote healthy watersheds, and become more resilient in a changing climate. There will be an opportunity to learn more about some of tips and tricks these producers have used to be Salmon-Safe and enhance their sustainable practices. Please share this invitation to anyone in your network who would be interested in attending as is open to everyone. Registration can be done through the Eventbrite.
