My name is Laure and I am a coordinator with the UBC SEEDS Sustainability Program. We work with students, faculty and UBC staff to develop applied research projects that advance UBC’s sustainability and wellbeing policies and practices on campus.

Get Involved with a SEEDS Directed Study Project!

Project: Climate-Friendly Food System Procurement Strategy: An evaluation and comparative analysis of various food-related certifications on climate change, biodiversity and climate justice

The UBC SEEDS Sustainability Program, in collaboration with representatives in Student Housing and Community Services, is looking for Food & Nutrition, Applied Biology, Sciences, Environment, Engineering, Economics, Business student(s) (or related disciplines) to conduct an evaluation and comparative analysis of food certifications related to climate change,  biodiversity, and food justice. The information will help to inform the first-ever draft UBC Climate-Friendly Food System (CFFS) Procurement Strategy spanning climate change mitigation and adaptation in alignment with UBC’s Climate Action Plan 2030. We are looking for a student or student/team with:

  • 3rd or 4th undergraduate or graduate student standing
  • Eligibility to participate in a directed study, capstone, or thesis project to complete this research – it is the responsibility of the student to secure a faculty supervisor
  • A strong passion for sustainability, climate action and food systems at UBC
  • Ability to start the project in the fall 2022 term

Title: Climate-Friendly Food System (CFFS) Procurement Strategy: An evaluation and comparative analysis of various food-related certifications on climate change, biodiversity and climate justice

Description: The purpose of this project is to complete a review of promising practices and an evaluation of food certifications that can inform a draft UBC Climate-Friendly Food System (CFFS) Procurement Strategy that spans climate change mitigation and adaptation to help operationalize the following food system attributes:

(1) Reduce GHG Emissions,

(2) Promote Biodiverse Resilient and Regenerative Food System, and

(3) Support Just, Sovereign and Resilient Communities.

 Dr. Vassilis Kontogiorgos, Senior Lecturer in Food Chemistry, The University of Queensland, School of Agriculture and Food Sciences

Dr. Vassilis Kontogiorgos is a food scientist by training. He received all his degrees in Food Science from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (BSc and MSc) and the University of Guelph, Canada (PhD).  He has worked as an NSERC research fellow at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (Canada) and as a faculty member at the Department of Biological Sciences, University of Huddersfield (UK), before joining the School of Agriculture and Food Sciences at the University of Queensland (Australia) as a teaching and research academic in food chemistry.  Dr. Kontogiorgos’s research interests are focused on food carbohydrate chemistry and food structuring. He is an associate editor of Food Hydrocolloids and Food Biophysics and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA, UK).

Program Overview

Our Fellows Program recognizes outstanding graduate and advanced undergraduate students pursuing migration and mobilities related studies and research at UBC. Fellows will be a vital part of our interdisciplinary academic community, contributing to CMS research excellence, programming and initiatives, and community engagement and outreach, in line with the Fellow’s areas of knowledge and interest. CMS Fellows are provided opportunities to collaborate with other cohort Fellows and support Centre-sponsored initiatives and programming. Fellowships are awarded for the academic year, after which fellows may reapply to the program.

 

DATES

  • Apply by September 19, 2022
  • Notifications sent by September 30, 2022
  • CMS Fellows program starts: October 3, 2022
  • CMS Fellows program ends: August 31, 2022
