The Business Risk Management Branch provides agricultural risk management services to help farmers and farm organizations proactively manage uncertainty through production insurance, income stabilization and wildlife damage compensation programs. These programs are funded through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership Agreement between the provinces and Canada.

As the Crop Risk Specialist, you will work independently within the terms, objectives, plans, policies and procedures of the Provincial and Federal Governments, the Ministry and the scientific principles and practices of agronomy and horticulture to analyze current and new agronomic practices and test pilot projects for the high profile production insurance and risk management programs. You will also be providing professional, technical expertise, correlation and standards experience, and guidance for production insurance product design, development, testing, delivery, and maintenance.

Qualifications for this role include: 

• Degree in the Information technology or Information Management, or Business Administration or related field and 2 years directly related experience; or
• Diploma in a directly related field and 3 years related experience; or
• Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture, Business or Economics; AND
• 5 years’ experience in agriculture industry analysis with a focus on financial and/or production parameters for commodities common to B.C.; OR
• Master’s degree in Agriculture, Business or Economics; AND
• 3 years’ experience in agriculture industry analysis with a focus on financial and/or production parameters for commodities common to B.C.; OR
• Secondary school graduation or equivalent or a Diploma in Agriculture, Business or Economics; AND
• 7 years’ experience in agriculture industry analysis with a focus on financial and/or production parameters for commodities common to B.C.
• Registered as a Professional Agrologist, or immediately eligible* for registration as a Professional Agrologist, with the British Columbia Institute of Agrologists.

• * Note:  immediately eligible is defined as being registered as a professional Agrologist in another Canadian jurisdiction and able to transfer that membership to the BCIA.  It is the responsibility of the applicant to have the BCIA review their qualifications to ensure they have the necessary requirements for registration.

• Minimum of three (3) years of experience in the discipline of agronomy or related to primary agriculture production.
• Minimum of two (2) years recent experience supervising technical and/or administrative staff (within the last 10 years).

Master of Science program on controlled traffic farming in fields under commercial potato production 

April 28^th, 2021

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented candidate for a Master of Science degree program on controlled traffic farming (CTF) in potato production systems in Atlantic Canada.

Agricultural machinery is essential to modern agriculture. Over the past century, the size and weight of agricultural machinery and traffic intensity have increased substantially, leading to widespread soil compaction in agricultural fields, resulting in deteriorated soil health. One solution to this traffic-induced soil compaction is CTF, which limits in-field traffic to fixed permanent tracks so that the areas between these tracks can be traffic-free. However, the effects of CTF have not been tested on commercial potato fields. The MS student will join a diverse team of researchers under the McCain Foods’ Future of Farm initiative to examine the effects of CTF on soil physical and chemical properties, field hydrology and runoff water quality, crop growth and yield, and farm revenue. A paired field sites under commercial potato productions have been established in the province of New Brunswick in Canada and the MS student will take the lead on field experiment and data analysis as part of his/her thesis program.

Position description

• The position is available immediately and will be open until filled
• The position will be funded by the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) and field work will be in New Brunswick
• The candidate can be enrolled in any Universities in Canada of their choice, providing that the University supports such an arrangement
• Stipend: 24k (in Canadian Dollars) per year plus benefits as applicable to Canadian federal government employees (health care and pension)

Requirement

• Holds a Bachelor degree in soil science, agricultural/biosystems engineering, agronomy, plant science, hydrology or a relevant area of agri-environmental science
• Enrolment in MS program in a Canadian University
• Fluent in English (spoken and writing) and excellent academic records
• Field research experiences related to agriculture or environmental sciences are considered asset qualification
• Willingness to work in both field and laboratory settings
• Meet all other HR requirements applicable to hiring by AAFC
