Walter C. Sumner Memorial Fellowship

The Walter C. Sumner Memorial Fellowships are available to Canadian citizens engaged in or about to start doctoral studies in Chemistry, Physics, Electrical Engineering or Computer Science at UBC.  The award is valued at $8,000 for one year, but may be extended for a second year.

Note that eligible applicants must “hold a degree from a Canadian university other than the one at which the doctoral studies will be conducted during the tenure of the fellowship” (full eligibility requirements are noted in the webpage linked below).

Application deadline: 4:00 pm PT on March 29, 2024.  Applications are submitted directly by applicants to G+PS.

Launch of IOF’s “Africa-UBC Oceans and Fisheries Visiting Fellow Program”

For the past several months the IOF has been working to develop a “Africa-UBC Oceans and Fisheries Visiting Fellow Program”, which would enable talented early-career researchers from sub-Saharan African universities and research institutes to engage with UBC researchers.

We are now ready to launch! Join us on Thursday, February 29, 2024 at 9:00 am PST (5:00 pm GMT for our partners in Ghana) as Dr. William Cheung, professor and IOF Director, Dr. Daniel Pauly, Dr. Rashid Sumaila, and Dr. Denis Aheto, Director of the Center for Coastal Management, University of Cape Coast, Ghana, announce the beginning of this program, and the opening for applications from African researchers.

Summer Tuition Fee Deferrals for TAs and RAs

Summer session Deferrals

The online deferral application will be open from March 1st to April 30th for Graduate students employed as Teaching or Research Assistants.  The deferral is intended for students that do not have funds available to pay their tuition fees by the due date and are relying on their stipend to make payment.  Students must submit a copy of their workday compensation screenshot.

Click profile at the top right corner, and click ‘compensation’. It will display the end date of their current appointment.

Online application periods are:

  • Summer session:              March 1 – April 30
  • Winter Term 1:  July 15 – August 31
  • Winter Term 2:                 November 1 – December 31

 

Tuition and student fees will be deferred as follows:

 

  • Summer Term 1: due date June 30th
  • Winter Term 1: due date Nov 30th
  • Winter Term 2: due date March 31th
