The Strange Case of the Singing Toadfish and its Bizarre Mating Behaviour | Ocean Matters Lecture

Join us for a fascinating look at the Plainfin Midshipman Fish. Learn about this strange and wonderful singing toadfish that can be found on beaches right here in British Columbia! These fish have many bizarre and wonderful courtship behaviours. They also have an unusual parental care system where the males are the sole protectors of the young. If this is not interesting enough, these fish also have light emitting cells on their body that they use to hunt prey!

Dr. Sigal Balshine, a professor from McMaster University, has been studying these fish and their strange behaviour for over 10 years! She will reveal little known facts about these incredible fish and how they are helping biologists understand the evolution of mating behaviours of all animals!

This event will be signed by an ASL interpreter. For further information see ocean.org/oceanmatters or contact ruth.sharpe@ocean .org

Changes to eligibility for UBCO faculty to hold supervisory roles and serve as University Examiners

Standard

The UBC Senate has approved updated policies and procedures relating to supervisory committees and University examiners to reflect the enhanced relationship between UBCV and UBCO faculty:

Graduate supervision:

·        Members in good standing of the College of Graduate Studies from the UBC Okanagan campus may now co-supervise UBC-Vancouver master’s and doctoral students and/or serve on master’s and doctoral student supervisory committees without requiring approval from the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.  Approval for UBC-Okanagan faculty in these roles is the responsibility of the graduate program concerned.  Note that sole supervision of UBC-Vancouver master’s and doctoral students by UBC-Okanagan faculty does require the approval of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, upon the recommendation of the graduate program concerned.  UBC-O faculty are not members of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

This information has been added to the following page on our website:

https://www.grad.ubc.ca/faculty-staff/policies-procedures/supervision

and is in the draft Calendar which will be released in June 2018:

http://www.calendar.ubc.ca/vancouver/proof/edit/index.cfm?tree=12,204,350,773

University Examiners for final doctoral oral exams:

·        Members in good standing of the College of Graduate Studies from the UBC Okanagan campus who hold an appointment as a full, associate, or emeritus professor and who are formally affiliated with a graduate program there that offers the doctoral degree are now eligible to serve as University Examiners for final oral examinations for UBC-Vancouver doctoral students.  Note that quorum requires that University Examiners be physically present in the examination room, and that G+PS does not cover the travel expenses of University Examiners.

This information has been added to the following page on our website:

https://www.grad.ubc.ca/current-students/final-doctoral-exam/selecting-university-examiners

and is on the form “Approval of University Examiners for Doctoral Dissertation”:

https://www.grad.ubc.ca/forms/approval-university-examiners-doctoral-dissertation-form

Please don’t hesitate to contact the doctoral exams team at graduate.doctoral@ubc.ca if you have questions.
