LFS 250 TAships 2023-24

Standard

We have 3 on-line TAships available in our second-year course, Land, Food and Community I (LFS 250). The course is an introduction to food systems literacy with an emphasis on developing systems thinking approaches, interdisciplinary collaboration skills, and equity competencies. We explore issues related to sustainability, food security, food sovereignty, and food environment analysis. Students develop skillsets related to systems diagrams, team work, and verbal, written and design-based communication. TAs are responsible for running their own tutorial sessions with support from the three course instructors (Delisa Lewis, Matt Mitchell and Will Valley), including tutorial templates, weekly teaching team meetings, and a course-specific TA handbook.

If you have any graduate students that are looking for more independent, on-line teaching experience and keen to guide 2nd-year students through food systems issues, please send them our way and/or direct them to our TA Portal to apply – https://ta-app.landfood.ubc.ca (must be either on campus (UBC Secure) or logged in through UBC VPN for the website to work).

Talk summary:

Food systems are a key driver of climate change and climate change poses significant threats to the stability of world food production. International food trade can enable markets to respond to food supply shocks; however, existing global food trade rules may constrain the policy space of states to enhance food system resilience to climate-induced shocks. While World Trade Organization (WTO) rules are designed to maximize economic efficiency and discourage overproduction, they may also limit states’ capacity to insure against global production shocks through public food stockholding.

HR Macmillan – power shutdown

Standard

HR Macmillan users:

Please be advised that there has been a request for two weekend power shutdowns to conduct the yearly main feeder maintenance work and to get the new air handler for 360 online.

Full building power shutdown: Saturday September 9th 7AM-3PM

South wing only power shutdown: Saturday September 16th 7AM-11AM (tentative) **Areas effected: Animal welfare, SALA, DAE & Comms areas**

It is suggested that Faculty, staff and students shut down desktop computers, external USB devices and any sensitive equipment end of day, Friday September 8th. Fridges and freezers should be ok during this period as long as they are not opened. For those with -80’s freezers/sensitive equipment that could be negatively impacted during this shut down, please contact me at your earliest convenience to discuss potential power backup options.

Any questions please contact andy.jeffries@ubc.ca
