The note below is very important and urgent, please read and follow the instructions. Some of you are up-to-date on the requirements, but most of you are not.

1)     FASmail

In response to privacy and security concerns as outlined in BC Provincial FIPPA legislation and UBC Policy #104, the Faculty of Land and Food Systems has assigned each of our graduate students a new UBC email account (FASMail).

This email account will remain active for the duration of your studies at LFS and must be used for all UBC-related correspondence. Starting in the spring of 2016, this email address will be the only one used by the LFS Grad Student Office to contact you.

Account Setup

To activate your email account, please login (without “.stu”) and change your CWL password .   (If you already have a FASMail account, you do not need to change your CWL password).

To test, log in. If your mail box is there, you don’t need to do anything else. If you need to create a FASMail mailbox, follow these instructions.

Update your email account in the SSC and notify Lia in the grad programs office. Deadline Sep 30^th, 2018.

To ensure that emails are not sent inadvertently to a non UBC email, please update your preferred email address in your SSC profile to this new email account.  This is especially important when you are appointed as a TA, as Connect retrieves email addresses for TA’s from SSC.

GSS Referendum

The results are in! Thanks to the more than 700 of you who voted in the referendum. All three motions passed with large majorities, most importantly the amendment to ensure our we comply with the new BC Societies Act.

The amendment to conform to the new BC Societies Act passed with 98.6% of the vote, the amendment to create an official position of Speaker passed with 96.2% of the vote and the amendment to establish a Standing Governance and Accountability Committee passed with 91.9%.

TAKE ACTION TO SUPPORT INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

The Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (of which the GSS is a member) is currently conducting a campaign to support Canada’s 350,000 international students.

“If you don’t think moving to an entirely new country is enough of a challenge, international students also face unclear and complex visa processes, rising and sometimes completely unpredictable tuition rates, limited ability to work, and difficulties immigrating to Canada permanently after graduation.”

If you would like to serve as a graduate student representative to Grad Council for a 1-year term, please nominate yourself by sending an email to aa@gss.ubc.ca containing you name, email, degree, department, faculty and one paragraph detailing the reasons of why you would like to serve on Grad Council.

The deadline for nominations is noon on Monday, October 15^th, 2018.

Elections will happen on Thursday, October 18^th, 2018 during the Graduate Student Society Council Meeting, which takes place in the Michael Kingsmill Forum, the Nest (4th floor) at 5:30pm. Attendance in person is strongly encouraged when your application is reviewed as there may be questions about your candidacy and more nominees than available seats.

Community Announcements

This project aims to better understand the health and well-being consequences of moving to a new community. We are especially interested in studying how people rebuild their social network after relocating and whether building a solid social network helps to mitigate any negative health consequences of moving.

You can participate in this study if you:

• Are between the ages of 19 – 55
• Have moved to Vancouver within the last 6 weeks OR have lived in Vancouver for 5 years or more
• If you moved to Vancouver within the last 6 weeks, you moved without your spouse or family and you plan on staying for at least 2 years
• Do not suffer from any chronic (long term) health conditions
• Can read, understand, and speak English
• Do not take any hormone replacement therapies (e.g., birth control pills)

Karl C. Ivarson Agricultural Scholarship
The Canadian Foundation for Food and Agricultural Education invites applications for The Karl C. Ivarson Agricultural Scholarship.

This scholarship is open to agricultural science students from the province of Alberta. Students may be enrolled in any post-secondary institution within or outside the province of Alberta. In 2018, two awards will be granted:
$10,000 Masters level
$17,000 PhD level

Candidates must hold Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Residence status in Canada and be
enrolled in their graduate program for at least one semester beyond the application deadline.

Deadline for applications is November 2, 2018

Scholarships are awarded on the following basis, but not necessarily placed in order of
importance:

1. Academic achievement
2. Areas of study
3. Community Involvement
4. Career interests
5. Letters of recommendation

Jessica Taylor worked with Bioenterprise British Columbia as the Acting Regional Manager and supported clients across the country in her role as Senior Analyst. Jessica relocated to British Columbia in 2016 to spearhead the organization’s expansion into western Canada. As acting Regional Manager, Jessica worked with stakeholders across British Columbia to build a diverse and sustainable ecosystem to support the growth of agri-tech and food companies. Jessica has a keen interest in project management, organizational behaviour and building meaningful strategic relationships.

Brock Cahill

Julie Andersen

A collaborator and founder of the non-profit Shark Angels, Julie Andersen is a passionate grassroots activist and marketing consultant. Inspired by Sharkwater, Julie partnered with Rob to start United Conservationists – leading a “Fin Free” movement throughout the world to ban shark fin
