GSS Referendum
The results are in! Thanks to the more than 700 of you who voted in the referendum. All three motions passed with large majorities, most importantly the amendment to ensure our we comply with the new BC Societies Act.
The amendment to conform to the new BC Societies Act passed with 98.6% of the vote, the amendment to create an official position of Speaker passed with 96.2% of the vote and the amendment to establish a Standing Governance and Accountability Committee passed with 91.9%.

Awesome October Events
Separate yourself from distractions and non-research responsibilities, and surround yourself with a community of writers at the GSS’s first one-day academic bootcamp on October 13th, hosted by the award-winning instructor and editor Dr. Letitia Henville. This bootcamp is open to all UBC graduate students.
Fraser Valley Wine Tour
A half day of touring the Fraser Valley and stopping for tastings of delectable wines at locations such as Township 7, Backyard Vineyard, Vista D’Oro Farms & Winery and Krause Berry Farm & Estate Winery.
DISCUSS SCIENCE AND POLICY
The October 20th civic election is coming up! Are you curious about the relationship between science and public policy? Want to give your ideas and have a respectful conversation with candidates from across party lines? This will be the event for you!
Everyone is welcome, however space is limited and this will a ticketed event.
TAKE ACTION TO SUPPORT INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
The Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (of which the GSS is a member) is currently conducting a campaign to support Canada’s 350,000 international students.
“If you don’t think moving to an entirely new country is enough of a challenge, international students also face unclear and complex visa processes, rising and sometimes completely unpredictable tuition rates, limited ability to work, and difficulties immigrating to Canada permanently after graduation.”

If you would like to serve as a graduate student representative to Grad Council for a 1-year term, please nominate yourself by sending an email to aa@gss.ubc.ca containing you name, email, degree, department, faculty and one paragraph detailing the reasons of why you would like to serve on Grad Council.
The deadline for nominations is noon on Monday, October 15th, 2018.
Elections will happen on Thursday, October 18th, 2018 during the Graduate Student Society Council Meeting, which takes place in the Michael Kingsmill Forum, the Nest (4th floor) at 5:30pm. Attendance in person is strongly encouraged when your application is reviewed as there may be questions about your candidacy and more nominees than available seats.
Community Announcements
This project aims to better understand the health and well-being consequences of moving to a new community. We are especially interested in studying how people rebuild their social network after relocating and whether building a solid social network helps to mitigate any negative health consequences of moving.
You can participate in this study if you:
- Are between the ages of 19 – 55
- Have moved to Vancouver within the last 6 weeks OR have lived in Vancouver for 5 years or more
- If you moved to Vancouver within the last 6 weeks, you moved without your spouse or family and you plan on staying for at least 2 years
- Do not suffer from any chronic (long term) health conditions
- Can read, understand, and speak English
- Do not take any hormone replacement therapies (e.g., birth control pills)

Consultation on U Boulevard Area – starting September 17
This will be an opportunity to provide input on shaping the design vision of the Bosque. We are also sharing a planning update on the U Boulevard area. You can provide your input online or in person from September 17 to October 5, 2018
