Let’s Talk Microbes Symposium

Let’s Talk Science is hosting an exciting symposium featuring topics related to microbiology, the human microbiome, synthetic biology, and other related topics for students in grades 10-12. We are recruiting volunteers for a number of roles, including registration, set up and clean up, and assisting with tours. Training will be provided prior to the event.

When: Friday, April 5th, 8:00 am – 3:00 pm

Girls’ Coding Workshop at John Oliver

We’re looking for a few enthusiastic volunteers to help us introduce girls in grades 6 to 9 to coding! In this six-week program, students will learn to write Python code to draw things using turtles and make simple games, as well as program Micro:bits. This term, we’re also piloting an advanced curriculum for returning students, which focuses on algorithm design, data visualization, and using Python libraries.

When: Tuesdays 3:30-5:45 PM from mid-April to late May

6 weeks total, exact dates TBD

Where: John Oliver, 530 East 41st Ave (41st & Fraser)

 

Volunteer requirements:
-Knowledge of Python (you don’t need to be an expert, since we’re starting at a very basic level)

-Awesome teaching and communication skills, commitment to communicating your passion for coding to the next generation

-Be able to attend all 6 workshops, plus a few planning meetings before the first session and in between as needed. If you need to miss a session or two that’s not a complete dealbreaker; we will try to work with you on this!

-Pass a criminal record check (we will cover the cost of this)

-Brief description of what you use code for in your own studies, research, and/or what you plan to do in the future. We are interested in having a group of volunteers with a variety of specialties (game developers, bioinformaticians, etc.) so that we can better communicate the wide range of what code is used for in the real world.

-Previous teaching/volunteer experience that you feel is relevant.

-Any questions you might have!

Quantum Leaps Conference

Quantum Leaps is a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) based conference that happens annually. It is a student organized event for female high school students (grades 10-12). The goal of the conference is to show students a glimpse of the real world and careers in STEM, so that they can explore what opportunities are available, and how to get there. Let’s Talk Science will be hosting a workshop on using forensics to solve a murder mystery and we looking for dedicated volunteers to facilitate it!

When: Sat April 13, 2019 2:00PM – 3:45PM

UHill Earth Day BBQ

Join UBCLTS and University Hill Elementary for the Annual UHill Elementary Earth Day BBQ! The Earth DayBBQ is an opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate the environment. We are looking for 4-6 volunteers to run some fun, crowd pleasing activities, including Edible DNA, DIY Slime, and clay fossils for students and their families. Materials and training will be provided and volunteers will be provided with delicious barbecue!

EXTENSION FOR CLIMATE-SMART AGRICULTURE

Dr. Kent Mullinix, Institute for Sustainable Food Systems, Kwantlen Polytechnic University 

Thursday March 21st – 6.30pm-8.30pm

Orchard Commons Room (ORCH) 3074, third floor (6363 Agronomy Rd) – UBC campus

Extension is a time-proven mechanism widely used to link industry and university-based researchers and guide research activities so that they effectively address industry challenges, and facilitate calculated, strategic programming to advance the agriculture sector. Dr. Mullinix will discuss the important role of extension linked to research, in regard to climate change mitigation and adaptation by the agriculture sector in BC. The discussion will include an examination of the reciprocal relationships between knowledge creation, knowledge dissemination, knowledge integration, and sector advancement. Various methods for effective extensive programming will be presented. Mullinix will also share examples of organizations that are currently providing extension services in the province and highlight current gaps and opportunities for professionals in this field. His presentation will be followed by a regional panel discussion with extension specialists and farmers who will share their experience with extension programming.

During the session, we will access to the Slido platform to facilitate questions and undertake interactive polls; please bring a smartphone or laptop with you. Light snacks and drinks are provided previous to the event. Registration is free at claudia.paez@ubc.ca
