UBC Let’s Talk Science is looking for enthusiastic students to join our coordinating team! The successful applicants will work with a dedicated group of coordinators and volunteers to engage youth in hands-on, minds-on science, technology, engineering, and math activities across Vancouver. Training and professional development opportunities will be provided. We have 5 Coordinator positions available (3 paid, 2 volunteer). A background in science and previous leadership experience would be assets!

Teacher Partnership Coordinator

The Teacher Partnership Program (TPP) is Let’s Talk Science’s hallmark program! The Coordinator for TPP recruits and trains volunteers that go into classrooms across Vancouver to deliver hands-on science activities from varying STEAM disciplines to youth of all ages. These science activities reach over 1000 students each year with the help of over 100 volunteers! We are looking for an engaged individual to coordinate the TPP program. A successful applicant will work with the UBCLTS Coordinator Team and volunteers to engage over 1000 youth across Vancouver, organizing visits, and matching Volunteers with classrooms and Teachers! The successful applicant must be a UBC Student or Post-Doctoral Fellow.

Position Dates: Sept 1, 2019 to August 31, 2020

Time Commitment: Up to 8 hrs/week (from Sept 1-April 30)

Hourly Wage: $17/hour


  • Participate in Coordinator Training with previous Coordinator in August 2019

  • Recruit graduate and undergraduate student volunteer leaders.

  • Recruit/liaise with Vancouver and other school board contacts and teachers

  • Attend monthly meetings with other LTS coordinators.

  • Revise and update volunteer training manuals and facilitate volunteer training sessions.

  • Communicate with volunteers & teachers to coordinate school visits.

  • Coordinate activity kits and supplies for school visits

  • Assist volunteers in accessing supplies & resources through LTS by holding office hours once a week (September – May).


SMaRT (Science Methods and Research Training) Coordinator

The SMaRT Program aims to enrich the scientific knowledge of Grade 5-7 elementary school students in East Vancouver schools. We form 18 pods of 3-5 undergraduates led by a graduate student facilitator. These pods are paired with 18 elementary school classrooms grades in under-served areas of East Vancouver. These pods work through an established grade-dependent curriculum and visit the classroom 4 times over the course of a semester.

Position Dates: Sept 1, 2019 to May 1, 2020

Time Commitment: Up to 5 hrs/week (from Sept 1-April 30)

Hourly Wage: $17/hour


  • Participate in Coordinator Training with previous Coordinator in August 2019

  • Act as a liaison between UBC LTS, UBC community service learning teaching assistant (CSL TA), elementary school teachers, pod leaders (graduate students and post-doctorals), pod members (undergraduates), and program sponsors.

  • Create budget for activity supplies and other expenses

  • Recruit both volunteers and elementary school teachers (grades 5,6 and 7)

  • Work with CSL TA to host information session(s) for interested volunteers (pod members/pod leaders)

  • Plan and lead trainings (prepare a presentation/curriculum, decide appropriate activities, coordinate room bookings and catering etc.)

  • Shop for kit supplies when required

  • Attend monthly meetings with other LTS coordinators.

  • Monitor SMaRT visit progress through continued correspondence with pod leaders and provide support to pod leaders as needed

  • Coordinate feedback surveys for pod members, pod leaders, and teachers

  • Distribute newsletters containing tips about leading good lessons, teamwork, etc.

  • Plan and schedule pod leader appreciation event

  • Coordinate kit return, item inventory and disposal with pod leaders


Big Events Coordinator

We are looking for an engaged individual who will organize and facilitate the annual, large scale events hosted by UBCLTS. These events include High School Symposia, the LTS Summer Camp, the Let’s Talk Science Challenge, Marine Connections, and Science Rendezvous. In this position, you will be responsible for creating the themes and the activities for these events, about one event per term from Sept – April, and three events from May – August.

Position Dates: Sept 1, 2019 to August 31, 2020.

Time Commitment: 2-6 hrs/week (from Sept 1-April 30)

Hourly Wage: $17/hour


  • Participate in Coordinator Training with previous Coordinator in July and August 2019

  • Recruit and train graduate and undergraduate students for events

  • Organize High School Symposia – including determining themes, activities, and recruiting Guest Speakers.

  • Organize the Summer Camp – including determining themes and activities, and serving in a supervisory role during the camp itself

  • Liaise with Let’s Talk Science National Office, Community Partners, and UBC to organize the space, logistics, programming, and activities for all events in this portfolio

  • Attend monthly meetings with other LTS coordinators


Lessons in Ecology and Evolution FUNdamentals (LEEF) Coordinator

Lessons in Ecology and Evolution FUNdamentals (formerly called MEED), under the umbrella of UBC Let’s Talk Science, is seeking TWOenthusiastic graduate students from the Faculty of Forestry, Faculty of Science or Faculty of Land and Food Systems to help coordinate LEEF for the 2019-2020 school year! This program pairs graduate student volunteers with teachers from the Vancouver area to develop and deliver an in-class or field lesson related to a topic of their choosing. Many volunteers use their own area of study as a basis for creating their lessons, developing important communication skills and learning how to relay their research to a younger audience.

Position Dates: Sept 1, 2019 to August 31, 2020

Time Commitment: 30hrs between Sept-May (Mostly between Sept-Nov)


  • Work with a previous coordinator to recruit and pair volunteers and teachers

  • Support lesson development for volunteers by organizing and facilitating two workshops

  • General organizational tasks

  • Attend monthly meetings with other LTS coordinators.


Social Media Coordinator

Advertising and communication are critical volunteer engagement tools for advocacy organizations such as Let’s Talk Science. Keeping volunteers up to date and excited is how we recruit new volunteers and retain the ones we have! Social media is a key medium for volunteer communication, enabling us to give regular updates about our initiatives with colourful and clever anecdotes and pictures! We are looking for someone creative to do just that for us! We are looking for an engaged individual who will organize and maintain the Facebook and Twitter feeds. This involves updating for current and upcoming events, with creative and fun posts. You will be provided with content by the Coordinator Team to disseminate to our awesome volunteers!

Position Dates: Sept 1, 2019 to August 31, 2020

Time Commitment: Up to 2 hrs/week

Are you looking for work experience that builds your network and enhances your professional abilities in training and supporting your colleagues? We are recruiting one graduate student to fill the position of LFS TA Training Coordinator for the 2019-2021 LFS TA Training Program period (July 2019 to May 2021) under the supervision of an Advisory Committee. Working with another coordinator, TAs in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems, and the Centre for Teaching Learning Technology, the successful applicant will have a strong interest and passion for education and empowering TAs to be successful in their work, learning, and teaching practice.

Currently, we offer LFS TAs a faculty-wide development program, which includes:

· A Teaching Assistant Handbook
· TA Orientations (September & January)
· Workshops in:

o Problem-based Learning
o Instructional Skills
o Marking & Assessment
o Facilitation Skills

· Technology Seminars
· Early Alert Training
· Monthly TA Community of Practice Coffee Hours
· Access to Faculty-based Support for TAs
· Preferential access to the Instructional Skills Workshop

Our program objectives are: 1) to have TAs be better prepared and supported in their TA roles, 2) to allow TAs to gain valuable professional skills (applicable beyond TA-ships), 3) to receive feedback from instructors and TAs on the skills they would like TAs to gain and 4) to establish a culture of Teaching Assistantships, where TAs and faculty are actively involved in a community of teaching and learning in LFS

This position pays $30.32/hour for an approximately 110-hour contract. There is some flexibility when the hours are worked, but generally they will be as follows:

Coordinator Job Responsibilities

· Coordinate and facilitate Term 1 and Term 2 TA Orientations
· Coordinate and facilitate monthly Community of Practice meetings
– Coordinate workshops in collaboration with the Centre for Teaching Learning Technologies (e.g., Problem Based Learning, Marking and Assessment, Conflict Management, Instructional Skills Workshop)
· Keep accurate accounting records of spending
· Monitor and record success of each TA Training Program activity with recommendations for improvement
· Develop annual progress reports
· Prepare project reports for the Granting agency
· Maintain records in open source (Google Drive) folders
· Promote high standard of teaching and learning in the faculty to students, TAs, instructors, faculty, staff and administration
· Develop a succession plan for future years (particularly relevant for masters students)
· Facilitate meetings with Faculty Advisory Committee (approximately 3 times/year)
