Subject: Information session at UBC from the Embassy of Japan, Japanese Funding Agencies

Dear Professors and researchers in UBC and SFU,

Hello.

This is Yasu from the Embassy of Japan!

I hope you are doing well!

I would like to let you know that I will visit UBC again on December 2nd and 3rd with Japanese funding agencies (JST and JSPS) and a national research institute (NICT, communication, AI, and Quantum research institute).

We are planning to have info session for students, post-doctoral fellows, and faculties who are interested in further collaboration with researchers in Japan.

I’m happy if you forward this information to your colleagues and friends and hoping this opportunity is valuable for the research community in UBC and SFU.

This event can be attended online or in person.

Doctoral Deadlines Reminder – Spring 2025 Graduation and April 30th completion

Standard

DOCTORAL deadlines for April

Please note: there are two sets of deadlines for spring, and they are very close together, which can be confusing. The first set of deadlines is for candidates who want to participate in the Spring Graduation Ceremony. Meeting these deadlines is key for students to ensure they can walk in convocation.

The second set of deadlines is for April 30 program completion. For candidates who miss the graduation deadline, this second set of deadlines will ensure their program is complete by the end of semester, but they will not be in time for graduation.

The deadline for submission of Nominations for External Examiner for PhD candidates wanting to complete on the timeline for Spring Graduation was last Friday, November 22. While this is a slightly flexible deadline, forms should really be in by Friday this week, to avoid delays.

As a reminder, the other dates candidates need to meet for Spring Graduation are as follows:

FRIDAY, 24 JANUARY, 2025 – Doctoral dissertation (and supporting documentation) submitted to Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for external examination.

FRIDAY, 21 MARCH 2025 – Last Day for Final Doctoral Oral Examination.

THURSDAY, 17 APRIL 2024 – Acceptance of final, approved doctoral dissertation by Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Please note that this is a Thursday because of Easter.

Not quite the same, but similarly:

The deadline for submission of Nominations for External Examiner for PhD candidates wanting to complete on the timeline for April 30 Program completion is last Friday, December 6. While this is a slightly flexible deadline, we may struggle to find an examiner before the winter break for forms that come in late.

As a reminder, the other dates candidates need to meet for April 30 Program completion are as follows:

FRIDAY, 7 FEBRUARY, 2025 – Doctoral dissertation (and supporting documentation) submitted to Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for external examination.

FRIDAY, 4 APRIL 2025 – Last Day for Final Doctoral Oral Examination.

WEDNESDAY, 30 APRIL 2024 – Acceptance of final, approved doctoral dissertation by Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Students will be able to choose to defend either in person or on Zoom. We will work with students to select the most appropriate mode for their defence.

Please distribute this email to any faculty or students you think may be interested.

Best,

Robyn
