Vancouver Coastal Health volunteers needed – 2 programs

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) – Community is looking for volunteers for 2 of their programs: Shop by Phone and Assisted Group Shopping programs!

The Shop by Phone Program assists home-bound seniors and disabled adults to remain independent with assistance with their weekly grocery orders! As a volunteer, you will be trained to receive grocery orders by program clients over the phone and shop at one of 3 Safeway locations for that client – grocery orders are delivered via Safeway’s home delivery service.

The Assisted Group Shopping Program assists home-bound seniors and disabled adults to also remain independent by helping them with their personal shopping and/or groceries at Oakridge Mall. Volunteers are pre-matched with clients and help with their shopping and socialize with the clients. After shopping, groups head back to the Oakridge Seniors Centre to have lunch or coffee together with other volunteers and seniors (volunteers are responsible for their own lunch).

Interested in one or both of these programs? Check out the volunteer descriptions above. If you are interested, have questions or require more info, please contact Jan Russell at 604-301-3886 or at jan.russell@vch.ca

ANTH 220 – First Nations BC

Looking for a course that is oriented to real world issues?  Consider ANTH 220 First Nations BC.

Recent court decisions from the Supreme Court of Canada underscores the importance of a solid understanding of First Nations issues, peoples, and practices.  Major energy projects such Enbridge Northern Gateway of Kinder Morgan’s TransCanada pipeline must take into consideration aboriginal rights and title- but most people living in BC and Canada really don’t understand what that means.  These court decisions have come as a major surprise to many people.  Fact is though issues around First Nations’ ownership, rights, and title are and will be critical to the economic development of BC and Canada.

First Nations BC (ANTH 220) provides a basic introduction to the first peoples of British Columbia, their resources and their economies. Topics covered include: an overview of the people and the place; the involvement of aboriginal peoples in the industrial economy, and; the processes of decolonialization. Students planning careers in education, natural resource management, health care, or social science research are encouraged to enroll.

This is a course that provides a critical contemporary primer to key issues facing economic and social development in BC and the ways that First Nations are at the center of these issues.

If you have any questions about the course feel free to contact me.  If you’re up for the journey and what to learn about something that will have a real world impact enroll in the course today!

Updated Course: APBI 360 (Food & Environment II)

Farmers on the job, at Pacheda Village, Raipur Chhattisgarh

APBI 360 uses a systems approach to investigate the functions and interactions of plants and animals in select agricultural ecosystems. Students will develop an appreciation of how animals can contribute and/or impact on sustainable food production systems. Throughout this course, students will have opportunities to apply principles of agroecology/sustainability from APBI 260/265 or those introduced in class when we discuss the basic design, analysis and management of agroecosystems. Animals in agroecosystems add a new dimension of complexity into any agroecosystem and students will be challenged to further develop their
problem-solving skills in this area.

The concepts explored and integrated into this course will be based on BC examples but are of global significance for sustainable agriculture and community development. Abiotic factors will be examined in utilizing a systems approach; however, some emphasis will
be on select crop and livestock species (rangeland plants, fruit & vegetable crops, sheep, cattle & poultry) and the design of certain systems for mixed food production. As both insects and wildlife have significant impacts on many food systems, short presentations/assignments by both the students and the instructor (guest speaker(s)) will be included. (Note: topics include insect population ecology relating to insect pests and their natural predators and also the impact of wildlife on food production and the impact
of food systems on wildlife).
